Little Lever Rapist
In August 2009, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence of child exploitation at the residence of Karl Jackson, a 43-year-old man residing on Third Avenue in Little Lever. The investigation was initiated after an external agency alerted police to the presence of indecent images stored on Jackson’s computers. The subsequent search revealed a horrifying collection of illegal material, including thousands of photographs depicting child abuse.
Among the items seized were three computers and a USB stick, all containing a vast array of illicit content. Specifically, authorities found a total of 7,801 images classified at level one, indicating the least severe category of indecency. Additionally, there were 54 images at level two, 21 at level three, 40 at level four, and five at level five, which is considered the most serious. The USB stick alone contained over 5,000 indecent images of children and five movies at the lowest level of severity, along with extreme pornography, which was also present on the seized devices.
The investigation also uncovered a disturbing collection of newspaper cuttings and reports related to high-profile cases, including the Soham murders and the infamous Ian Huntley, who was responsible for the deaths of young girls and women. These materials indicated Jackson’s obsession with such heinous crimes, although having an interest in these cases is not itself a criminal offense. However, the possession of indecent images and extreme pornography is illegal.
Prosecutor David Clarke explained that the charges against Jackson included 16 counts of making indecent photographs of a child and two counts of possessing such images. The charges were brought before the law before the criminalization of extreme pornography, which later became an offense in its own right.
Initially, Jackson was granted bail, but just two days later, he purchased another computer. This device, along with a USB stick, was subsequently seized by police. The new evidence further revealed more than 5,000 indecent images and additional illegal content.
At Bolton Crown Court, Judge Timothy Clayson sentenced Jackson to eight months in prison, suspended for two years. The court also mandated that Jackson participate in the Northumbria Sex Offender Group Programme. Furthermore, he was placed under a five-year sexual offences prevention order and required to notify police of his whereabouts for the next decade. Detective Constable Richard Armstrong of Bolton CID described the images as shocking and emphasized the sickening scale of the material discovered, highlighting the severity of Jackson’s offenses and the importance of ongoing monitoring and intervention.
