KARL ASHTON FROM LEIGH SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES AT MANCHESTER COURT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community of Leigh, Karl Ashton, a 36-year-old resident of Rugby Road, was sentenced to prison after admitting to the possession and creation of hundreds of indecent images of children. The case came to light when Ashton pleaded guilty to these serious offenses just as a trial was about to commence in October.
Between October 4 and November 13, 2018, Ashton was found to have produced and stored a total of 142 images, including four of the most severe category A images, five of category B, and 133 of category C.
These images depicted the most disturbing and illegal content involving minors.
Further, between October 20 and November 6, 2022, Ashton admitted to creating an additional three category A images, one category B, and 31 category C images, highlighting a disturbing pattern of behavior over several years.
During the proceedings, it was also ordered that a charge of perverting the course of justice be formally recorded against Ashton, indicating attempts to interfere with the investigation or conceal evidence.
The case was heard at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, where Recorder Peter Atherton sentenced Ashton to 21 months in prison.
The court also mandated that Ashton register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
In addition to the prison sentence, Ashton was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which will remain in effect indefinitely, restricting his activities and contact to prevent further harm.
The court also imposed a £187 victim surcharge, which Ashton is required to pay.
All devices on which the illegal images were stored will be confiscated and destroyed, ensuring that no further illegal material can be accessed or circulated.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat child exploitation and the importance of vigilance within communities like Leigh to protect vulnerable children from such heinous crimes.
