Riddings Domestic Homicide
Kain Tailby, a 31-year-old man from Riddings, has been convicted of the brutal murder of his partner, Christine Everett-Hickson, who was only 21 years old at the time of her death. The tragic incident unfolded during what was supposed to be a celebration of their anniversary, turning a joyful occasion into a scene of violence and heartbreak.

According to court proceedings at Derby Crown Court, the assault took place in their shared residence in Riddings, Derbyshire, in the early hours of 18 February 2024. Jurors heard harrowing details of the attack, which involved Tailby repeatedly slamming Christine’s head onto the floor. The severity of the injuries was evident, with medical reports later confirming extensive brain damage, skull fractures, and severe bruising.

Prosecutor Mary Prior described the assault in vivid detail, stating, "He shouted at her and immediately used his hands around her neck to lift her head from the floor on several occasions, and hit her head back onto the floor with enough force that their downstairs neighbour heard five to six banging noises and left his flat to call the police." The neighbor’s intervention underscored the violence of the incident and the immediate concern it raised.

Following the attack, Tailby attempted to clean the blood from Christine’s ear by placing her in the bath, an act that demonstrated his awareness of the severity of her injuries. He then contacted emergency services himself, prompting paramedics to rush Christine to the hospital. Medical staff quickly diagnosed her with devastating brain injuries, including skull fractures and extensive bruising, which indicated the brutality of the assault.

Despite being placed on life support, Christine’s condition deteriorated rapidly as her brain continued to swell. Medical teams made the difficult decision to withdraw life support after organ donation arrangements were made, leading to her death at 00:39 GMT on 23 February 2025. Her passing marked the tragic culmination of a violent act that shattered her family and friends.

During police interviews, Tailby offered a somewhat contradictory account. He claimed to have been in a bad mood due to a ‘temperamental’ cat and suggested that the events of that night escalated from a minor dispute. Initially, he denied intentionally hurting Christine, but later admitted to banging her head on the floor five or six times, fully aware of the harm he was causing.

On Wednesday, Tailby was found guilty of murder. His sentencing is scheduled for Friday at Derby Crown Court. The court emphasized that Tailby must have known that the force used could cause serious injury or death but chose to act violently for reasons only he can explain. Justice highlighted the cruelty of the act, stating that Christine’s life was taken away in a moment of mindless violence, leaving her family to mourn her loss and grapple with the devastating consequences of his actions.
