JUSTIN BARRS AND SHOCKING REPEAT OFFENSES IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE

A known sex offender, Justin Barrs, has been remanded into custody once again merely months after his previous release from prison.

Barrs, aged 25, has a long history of sexual offenses, with convictions for producing indecent images of children dating back five years, and yet again in 2020.

Despite his past, he was released into the community on January 26, but his recent conduct has resulted in his immediate re-imprisonment.

The circumstances leading to his latest incarceration involve a breach of the strict conditions that were placed upon his release.

Part of these conditions mandated Barrs to cooperate fully with authorities by giving his mobile phone for inspection at Thorpe Wood Police Station in Peterborough.

This was supposed to occur the day after he moved to Cambridgeshire from Suffolk, specifically on April 4.

As law enforcement examined his device, officers uncovered concerning activities.

It was revealed that Barrs had created three different usernames on various online chat platforms, possibly to conceal his activities.

Additionally, he had gone to the extent of deleting the Snapchat app from his phone, which further raised suspicions.

During police questioning, Barrs did not deny his involvement in online groups and admitted that he had been participating in one that consisted of individuals aged between 13 and 19.

His candidness was encapsulated in his own words when he simply told officers, “I'm an idiot” — a stark admission that reflected his awareness of misconduct.

Barrs, whose address is listed as Essendyke, Bretton, was subsequently charged with multiple violations.

These included three counts of failing to adhere to the regulations governing his registration on the Sex Offenders Register, as well as breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) that had been previously imposed.

The severity of these breaches warranted judicial action.

On August 3, at Peterborough Crown Court, Barrs pleaded guilty to all charges.

The court responded with a sentence of three years and four months in prison.

Detective Constable Jon Edwards commented on the case, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children and vulnerable individuals.

He stated, “Protecting children and vulnerable people from harm is one of our top priorities and I am very pleased Barrs' breaches of his release conditions were discovered so he could be brought back before the courts.” He also issued a warning to the public, especially to parents and guardians, urging them to have open conversations with their children about the dangers posed by social media, mobile devices, and the importance of maintaining online safety.

This case underscores ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of monitoring sex offenders and highlights the need for continued vigilance in protecting communities from those with a history of sexual offenses.
