YORK WOMAN CONVICTED OF STALKING FORMER FITNESS COACH
A woman named Julie Rookes, aged 50 from York, was convicted of stalking her former fitness coach involving serious alarm or distress.
Rookes had become 'obsessed' with her victim after joining his online exercise classes during the Covid pandemic, attending about 20 sessions weekly.
She visited multiple gyms across North Yorkshire, made multiple trips to attend her victim's new fitness center after he changed employment, and even turned up at his home and workplace despite being banned from his classes.
The court heard that the stalking was 'like no other situation the victim had ever experienced,' and it significantly affected his mental health, worsening an existing medical condition.
Rookes was convicted on 17 February and sentenced on 19 March 2025 to a 12-month community order, 20 days of rehabilitation activity, and 120 hours of unpaid work.
She was also ordered to pay costs of £620 and a victim surcharge of £114.
Additionally, a five-year restraining order prevents her from contacting the victim.
