July 2013 Woman is jailed for sex assault on bus girl A woman who sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl on a bus – while a man took photographs of the attack – has been jailed. Magistrates at Wakefield heard Julie Ann Hemingway, 31, asked her victim “Are you bisexual? Because I am” during the incident on the 496 Wakefield to Upton bus. Hemingway, of Carlton Close, Hemsworth was jailed for 20 weeks after admitting a charge of sexual touching. Prosecutor, Richard Ogden said Hemingway, who had been celebrating her 31st birthday, was drunk when she got on the bus with a man at Ackworth. The court heard Hemingway sat asked the girl about being bisexual then touched the girl’s hair and told her she was “gorgeous”. The girl protested she was only 17 but Hemingway replied: “Age is just a number. A woman knows what a woman wants.” The court heard Hemingway then groped the girl, as the man who had got on the bus with Hemingway took photographs. A PCSO got on the bus and the girl was able to raise the alarm. Magistrates heard a victim impact statement from the teenager who said: “I want her to be sorry for what she has done.” Hemingway told the court: “I’ve done wrong. I shouldn’t have done it and I’m sorry.” Magistrates jailed Hemingway for 20 weeks and ordered that her name is placed on the sex offenders’ register for seven years. Bench chairman Malcom Clowson said: “We feel we have no options left open to us today other than a custodial sentence.”
