Lincoln Rapist
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Lincoln, Joshua Sly, a student at the University of Lincoln, was found guilty of distributing indecent images of children and engaging in online conversations that involved child sexual abuse. The incident came to light in March 2021, when Sly’s online activities were scrutinized by law enforcement authorities.
According to court reports, Sly, who was about to commence his studies at the University of Lincoln at the time, had engaged in a series of illicit online exchanges. He sent three graphic video clips depicting children being sexually abused to a woman in Canada whom he had met through an online chat platform. The content of these videos was deeply disturbing and contributed to the severity of his charges.
Prosecutor Lisa Hardy detailed to the court that Sly had engaged in a “disturbing conversation” with the Canadian woman, during which he openly discussed performing sexual acts and expressed a desire to rape a baby. Hardy revealed that the woman mentioned she had a three-week-old niece, to which Sly responded with a chilling comment: “perfect.”
Law enforcement authorities became aware of Sly’s online activities after his internet usage drew suspicion. In November 2019, police traced his digital footprint to an address in uphill Lincoln. During a search of his residence, officers seized a laptop and an iPhone. Subsequent examination of these devices uncovered a total of 56 indecent images of children, along with five images classified as extreme pornography.
Miss Hardy emphasized that the content of Sly’s online chats, particularly on platforms like Kik and Skype, was of significant concern to investigators. When questioned, Sly admitted that at the time of the offences, he was experiencing depression and feelings of loneliness. He explained that he had initially entered into conversations with the Canadian woman and was drawn into a group of individuals with similar interests. He acknowledged that the interactions became sexual in nature and that she had begun sending him explicit material.
It was also revealed that Sly was only 18 years old when he engaged with the woman and that he ceased his illegal activities approximately six months before police raided his home. Now aged 20 and residing on Spital Street in Lincoln, Sly pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including the distribution of indecent images of children between July and September 2018, three counts of making indecent images of a child, and possession of extreme pornographic images.
In sentencing, Sly received a 16-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years. As part of his rehabilitation, he was ordered to undertake a 30-day activity program and complete a sex offender treatment course. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years and was subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, aimed at restricting his future conduct and ensuring community safety.
