JOSHUA SIMPEY FROM YORK SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES
In March 2014, York Crown Court delivered a stern warning to teenagers about the dangers associated with online child sexual images, as it sentenced Joshua Simpey, an 18-year-old undergraduate student, for possessing a significant amount of illegal material.The court heard that Simpey, who resides on Deer Hill Grove in Clifton Moor, had been involved in viewing and downloading indecent images of children from the age of 13 until just days before police arrived at his home when he was 17.
Prosecutor Robert Stevenson detailed the extent of the material found on Simpey's computer, revealing that authorities discovered a staggering 1,637 indecent images of children, including 204 classified as the most severe levels of abuse.
Additionally, there were 57 prohibited images and three categorized as extreme.
The police also uncovered 30 illegal videos, with 26 of these falling into the top two levels of severity.
It was noted that approximately half of this material had been deleted by Simpey, indicating an attempt to conceal his activities.
The presiding judge, Judge Stephen Ashurst, emphasized the seriousness of such offenses, stating, “It is important people, particularly in your age group, understand that accessing this material is likely to bring them into conflict with the police.
The fact that you have been publicly exposed and shamed over what you have done is part of your punishment.” He further remarked on the potential long-term consequences for Simpey, highlighting that his intelligence and career aspirations could be severely impacted by his convictions.
“It is sometimes not appreciated, particularly by young people, that a conviction for this sort of offence may have a bearing on whether you are able to travel to certain countries in the future.
That is a price you will have to pay for your decision to download this particular type of material,” the judge warned.
As part of his sentence, Simpey was placed under a community order that includes two years of supervision and mandatory participation in a sex offenders’ rehabilitation course focused on internet safety.
He was also registered on the sex offenders’ register for five years and was subject to a sexual offences prevention order, which restricts his internet use and contact with children under 16.
His legal representative, barrister Glenn Parsons, expressed his inability to explain why Simpey engaged in such behavior but acknowledged that he was a talented student studying science, emphasizing the gravity of his actions and their potential impact on his future.
