JOSEPH THOMAS SENTENCED IN LONDON FOR ANIMAL ABUSE CASE
Joseph Thomas, born on November 19, 1973, and residing at 28A Crouch Hill, Haringey, London N4 4AU, was convicted in 2020 of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and failing in his duty to ensure animal welfare.Thomas was found guilty of multiple acts of cruelty against his Staffordshire bull terrier, Marley, who is estimated to be two or three years old. Over a period of two years, Thomas subjected the dog to repeated abuse, including punching, whipping with a steel lead, and beating him with a branch. The court heard that this ongoing cruelty resulted in Marley suffering from two detached retinas and partial sight loss.
The court was told how Thomas terrorized Marley with attacks such as punching and whipping him. On January 15, 2019, witnesses reported seeing Thomas forcefully hitting Marley about 20 times with a heavy branch along the Parkland Walk near Ashmount School. Prosecutor Mark Jones explained that Thomas had obtained Marley in 2017, and a neighbour had witnessed him pull the dog off the ground using a lead multiple times, causing Marley to choke and thrash in the air. The neighbour also reported hearing harrowing screams from inside Thomas's flat.
Further incidents included a Tesco employee witnessing Thomas punching the dog in the ribs, and another witness observing Thomas strike Marley four times in the same area. When approached, Thomas dismissively replied, “It’s nothing to do with you,” to which the witnesses responded, “It’s got something to do with me, we’re in a public space.”
Marley was seized by authorities from Thomas’s residence on April 26, 2019.
During sentencing, Dr. Joan Scanlon highlighted Thomas’s lack of remorse, ongoing denial of guilt, and the considerable distress caused to witnesses as reasons for imposing a prison sentence. Thomas was sentenced to 26 weeks in jail, with a victim surcharge of £115. He was also subject to an indefinite disqualification from owning animals, with no right of appeal for five years.
