JOSEPH NUGENT FROM CREE, CO CLARE, SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN COUNTY CLARE

In a case that has shocked the local community, a 70-year-old farmer from County Clare has been handed down a significant prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple serious crimes involving a young boy. The defendant, Joseph Nugent, who resides at Dromehill in Cree, County Clare, was convicted on a total of 48 counts related to child abuse, including 24 counts of indecent assault and 24 counts of buggery.

These heinous acts reportedly took place over a period spanning from 1964 to 1969, a time when the victim was only seven years old. The court heard that the abuse occurred as the young boy was walking home from school, passing by Nugent’s farm, which was located in Cree. The details of the case revealed a disturbing pattern of repeated offenses committed by Nugent against the young boy, who was vulnerable and unable to defend himself at the time.

Judge Brian McMahon presided over the case and described the nature of the crimes as particularly egregious. He emphasized that the assaults involved an adult perpetrator abusing a young child, with the acts being carried out through physical violence. The judge noted that these assaults were not isolated incidents but rather ongoing, continuous acts committed for the perpetrator’s gratification. The court also heard that the victim, now in his 40s, would require psychiatric counselling for the rest of his life to cope with the trauma inflicted upon him during his childhood.
