JOSEPH HOPKINSON FROM LEICESTER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN CHELTENHAM
A man from Leicester, Joseph Hopkinson, aged 39, has been sentenced to prison after a disturbing incident involving an attempt to meet a child for sexual assault.The case unfolded when Hopkinson traveled by train from Leicester to Cheltenham in August 2022, with the apparent intent of raping a 10-year-old child.
Unbeknownst to him, he was communicating with specialized police officers who had set up a sting operation to catch him in the act.
Hopkinson's arrest took place at Cheltenham railway station on August 17, 2022, as he arrived at the station, believing he was about to meet the young victim.
The police had been monitoring his communications, which revealed his disturbing intentions.
Following his apprehension, authorities discovered that Hopkinson was in possession of cannabis, both on his person and at his residence in Leicester.
These findings added to the charges against him.
Initially, Hopkinson denied the allegations and was scheduled to stand trial at Exeter Crown Court on February 13.
However, on the day the trial was set to commence, he unexpectedly changed his plea to guilty.
This decision led to a sentencing hearing at Gloucester Crown Court, where he was formally sentenced to seven years and two months in prison for arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offense, specifically the rape of a child under the age of 13.
In addition to his primary sentence, Hopkinson received a nine-month term for two separate drug offenses, which will run concurrently with his other sentence.
Since his arrest, he has remained in custody, with authorities taking further steps to protect the community.
Detective Inspector Simon Goodenough, who is part of the child sexual exploitation and indecent images of children units, commented on the case, stating, “Hopkinson has a clear sexual interest in children and was intent on causing them significant harm.
He spent months communicating with police officers about abhorrent acts he wanted to commit against young children, and it was evident that he was planning to carry out these vile intentions.” He emphasized the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies, noting that police teams work tirelessly to track down and apprehend sexual predators who pose a threat to children.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving officers from the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) and Gloucestershire Constabulary’s teams specializing in indecent images and child sexual exploitation.
Detective Inspector David Wells from SWROCU’s online investigations team added, “There is no doubt that Hopkinson posed a serious threat to children, and the sentence handed down to him reflects the severity of his actions.” As part of the legal consequences, Hopkinson has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and has been issued an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further harm.
