JOSEPH FAY SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IN PRISON FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN OXFORD
A man named Joseph Fay has been sentenced to a lengthy period of imprisonment after being found guilty of sexually abusing a young girl during the 1980s in Oxford.Fay, aged 66, was convicted of multiple serious charges related to the abuse, which took place over a period of time during his youth.
The case brought to light the harrowing details of his repeated sexual assaults against the young victim, which were accompanied by acts of violence and physical abuse.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Charles Ward-Jackson highlighted the severity of the victim’s suffering.
In her police interviews, the young girl recounted how Fay had inflicted physical harm on her, including beating her with a belt and holding her head underwater to silence or punish her.
Mr.
Ward-Jackson explained that these violent acts appeared to be linked to Fay’s frustration or refusal to comply with his sexual demands, indicating a pattern of coercion and abuse accompanied by brutality.
The trial, held at Oxford Crown Court, saw Fay found guilty by a jury of charges including rape and indecent assault.
However, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on a charge of indecency with a child.
Fay’s criminal history was noted, but his previous convictions pertained to different types of offenses such as violence and theft, and were considerably older, thus not directly related to his present convictions.
Defense lawyer Jane Carpenter requested that the court consider Fay’s poor health, noting that he had been detained in custody for the past ten weeks and was facing difficulties obtaining his essential heart medication.
She detailed instances where Fay had been left without medication for days and had been advised to take aspirin as a substitute, which raised concerns about his health and treatment in custody.
Judge Maria Lamb, who presided over the case, sentenced Fay to a term of 15 years in prison.
She also ordered that Fay serve an additional year on license upon his release, designating him as a “sex offender of particular concern” due to the gravity of his crimes against the child.
The judge emphasized that the violent elements of the abuse would be considered an aggravating factor in her sentencing decision.
The case’s investigation and subsequent conviction were praised by Thames Valley Police.
Investigator Karen Zoldan expressed her support for the victim, acknowledging the long delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a backlog of cases.
She commended the victim’s patience and bravery, stating that her desire to have her voice heard was a driving force behind bringing Fay to justice.
Zoldan further noted that the harmful impact of Fay’s actions had profoundly affected the victim’s life.
She concluded by paying tribute to the victim’s resilience and trust in the authorities to pursue justice, hoping that the substantial prison sentence would help her in the process of recovery and moving forward with her life.
