Trowbridge Child Sexual Abuser
In a serious legal development, Jose Carlos Barreiro, a resident of Trowbridge, is set to be registered as a sex offender following his admission to possessing and creating obscene images of minors as young as six years old. The case was heard at North West Wiltshire Magistrates Court in Chippenham on Thursday, July 18, where Barreiro, aged 43 and residing on Church Street, pleaded guilty to a total of 12 charges related to indecent images.

The charges stem from a collection of illicit material that spanned over nine years, beginning in December 2002. Authorities uncovered a significant cache of images on Barreiro’s computer, which included two extreme pornographic images. The collection comprised 4,975 images and 230 pseudo-photographs, with the majority classified as level 1 severity, but some reaching as high as level 4, indicating more severe content.

The investigation was initiated after intelligence was received from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre. This tip-off prompted a search of Barreiro’s property towards the end of 2011, leading to the discovery of the illicit material. The case was subsequently adjourned to allow for a detailed report to be prepared by the probation service, which will inform the sentencing process.

Barreiro is scheduled to be sentenced at the same court in Chippenham on Thursday, August 8. Until then, he has been granted bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition on any unsupervised contact with children aged 16 or under. The case highlights ongoing concerns about online child exploitation and the importance of law enforcement efforts to combat such crimes.
