In June 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Burslem involving an 18-year-old named Jordan Lawton, whose actions resulted in severe injuries to a young child. The incident was triggered by Lawton's inability to control his temper when faced with a crying baby, leading to a series of violent acts that left the infant with life-altering injuries.

According to court reports, Lawton lost his composure and reacted with extreme violence. He squeezed the child's chest, which is a highly dangerous act that can cause internal injuries, and then forcibly brought the child's legs together. In a moment of anger, he also threw a PlayStation controller at the child's foot, an act that contributed to the child's extensive injuries.

The consequences of Lawton's outburst were devastating. The child sustained four broken ribs, two fractured legs, and a broken foot. These injuries required immediate medical attention and raised serious concerns about the child's safety and well-being. The case came to light after a support worker noticed a mark on the child's face, prompting further investigation.

Following the discovery, the child was taken to a general practitioner (GP) for initial assessment, and subsequently referred to a paediatrician for specialized examination. The authorities quickly became involved, and Lawton was questioned by police. During police interviews, he accepted responsibility for causing the injuries, admitting that his actions were triggered by the child's persistent crying.

Lawton, who resides on Hamil Road in Burslem, later admitted to causing or allowing serious physical harm to the child. His admission was based on the understanding that the injuries occurred during a single incident when he was unable to cope with the child's crying. The court heard that his behavior was a clear case of non-accidental injury, which is a serious criminal offense.

In sentencing, Judge Paul Glenn addressed Lawton directly, emphasizing the gravity of the injuries and the importance of accountability. Lawton was sentenced to 10 months in a young offenders' institution, but this sentence was suspended for 18 months, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offense within that period. As part of his rehabilitation, Lawton is required to complete a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement and perform 200 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Glenn concluded by stating, “A doctor concluded the injuries were non-accidental,” underscoring the severity of the case and the importance of protecting vulnerable children from harm.
