JORDAN DAVIES FROM BRIDGEND, SOUTH WALES, SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG ROXY
In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Jordan John Davies, a resident of Bridgend in South Wales, was found guilty of starving and neglecting a young dog named Roxy, leading to severe suffering and physical deterioration. The heartbreaking case came to light after Roxy was surrendered to Hope Rescue in Llanharan on April 8, 2024, in an emaciated state that shocked everyone involved.Roxy was discovered to be dangerously underweight, covered in painful pressure sores, and suffering from untreated infections affecting her eyes and skin. The rescue organization issued a public appeal on social media, seeking information about the dog's owner. Through this appeal, authorities identified Jordan Davies as Roxy’s owner, prompting further investigation by the RSPCA.
RSPCA investigators took swift action, leading to Davies being prosecuted for his role in the dog's suffering. During the court proceedings, Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Black of the RSPCA recounted her first encounter with Roxy at Hope Rescue. She described the dog as being alert but very quiet, curled up in a bed within the reception area. Black noted that Roxy was extremely thin, with all her bones clearly visible, including her hips, ribs, and spine, which could be both seen and felt. She also observed sores on Roxy’s leg that appeared to be pressure sores, indicative of prolonged neglect.
Black further explained that Roxy had gained only 2 kilograms since being handed into the rescue center, highlighting the extent of her prior malnutrition. A veterinarian who examined Roxy on the same day confirmed her dire condition, assigning her a body score of just one out of nine. The vet reported that Roxy was ravenous for food once offered, but her body was riddled with sores, and her skin and eyes were infected. The veterinarian concluded that Roxy had been suffering for at least eight weeks, enduring significant pain and distress.
On May 16, Deputy Chief Inspector Black revisited Hope Rescue to see Roxy, now renamed Mia, after her recovery. She observed a remarkable transformation: Mia had gained weight, appeared healthy, and was lively and alert. Black praised the rescue efforts, emphasizing the importance of partnership working across organizations. She expressed her satisfaction that Mia had been given a second chance and was now in a loving forever home.
Hope Rescue’s Head of Operations, Sara Rosser, also commented on the case, expressing gratitude to the RSPCA for their involvement. She described how the rescue team was horrified upon seeing Mia’s condition and how she was initially cared for at the rescue center before being placed in a dedicated foster home. Rosser shared that Mia now lives happily in Shropshire, where her new owners report she is energetic, confident, and affectionate. The transformation from a neglected, suffering dog to a joyful pet underscores the importance of proper care and attention.
As part of his sentencing, Jordan Davies received a 12-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, along with 10 days of rehabilitation. He was also ordered to pay £1,200 towards costs and was disqualified from keeping all animals for ten years, a ban that will expire in December 2034. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of animal welfare organizations in tackling cruelty and ensuring accountability for those responsible for such neglect.
