JONNY FERGUSON SHAMES BELFAST WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGE CLIENT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Belfast, Northern Ireland, a personal trainer named Jonny Ferguson has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a vulnerable teenage client. The incident, which took place over several months in 2023, has brought to light a series of inappropriate and predatory behaviors that Ferguson engaged in during his sessions at a local gym.Ferguson, aged 37 and residing at Hydepark Court in Newtownabbey, was convicted of two counts of sexual assault and one count of harassment following a court hearing at Laganside Magistrates Court in Belfast. The court was told that Ferguson’s misconduct included repeatedly smacking the young woman’s bottom, attempting to kiss her, and even trying to lick her ears during their training sessions. These actions were described as completely inappropriate and highly invasive, especially considering the victim’s age and vulnerability.
The court heard that Ferguson’s behavior extended beyond the physical acts. He engaged in a pattern of sending troubling text messages to the teenager, which included statements such as, “It was an honest mistake, can we talk about it like adults?”, “I’m deleting your number, I wish you all the best,” “don’t be saying to (the gym owner),” “sorry again about today,” and “I’m not doing anything else, I swear to God on my son’s life.” These messages, prosecutors argued, demonstrated a clear attempt to manipulate and intimidate the victim, even after she had explicitly asked him to leave her alone.
Ferguson’s denials of the allegations were met with skepticism by the court. He claimed that he had not engaged in any sexual contact, despite admitting to calling the young woman “f***ing useless” during their sessions, which caused her to cry. The court was also informed that Ferguson had made efforts to evade responsibility, providing evasive answers during his testimony and failing to give straightforward responses to questions. Judge Anne Marshall described Ferguson as “evasive” and noted that his messages only made sense when viewed in light of the victim’s account.
The court proceedings revealed that Ferguson’s misconduct was not only physical but also psychological, taking advantage of the young woman’s trust and vulnerability. The judge emphasized that Ferguson’s actions were compounded by his position of trust as her personal trainer, which he exploited for his own inappropriate purposes.
In sentencing, Judge Marshall acknowledged that Ferguson’s conduct crossed the threshold for custodial punishment. However, she chose to suspend the six-month sentence for three years, citing her desire to protect other women from similar behavior in the future. The sentence was composed of four months for the sexual assault charges and two months for harassment, to be served consecutively. Additionally, Ferguson was handed a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO), which prohibits him from contacting the victim or her family, and from entering into any romantic or sexual relationships without full disclosure of his convictions.
Following the sentencing, the victim’s mother expressed her approval of the court’s decision but also voiced her disappointment that Ferguson plans to appeal. She described the case as deeply upsetting, especially given that Ferguson was preparing to get married at the time of the offenses. The mother emphasized that the evidence against Ferguson was clear and in black and white, including messages where he apologized and pleaded with the victim not to escalate the situation.
This case has cast a shadow over Belfast’s fitness and personal training community, raising concerns about the safety and trustworthiness of professionals in the industry. The community now awaits the outcome of Ferguson’s appeal, which could potentially alter the course of justice in this troubling case.
