JONATHAN SWEET OF BLYTH SENTENCED FOR INDECENT IMAGE OFFENCES IN NEWCASTLE
Jonathan Sweet, a resident of Blyth in Northumberland, was found in possession of hundreds of child abuse images on his mobile phone. The prosecution revealed that Sweet, 40 years old and residing on Rowley Street, Blyth, had stored numerous disturbing pictures and videos depicting children as young as six months old.
When police executed a search warrant on October 21, 2021, officers seized Sweet’s devices, discovering the illicit material in an application on his phone.
Neil Pallister, the prosecutor, explained, "After information was received, officers went to his home.
Two devices were seized and inspected, but initially, nothing was found.
It was only after officers visited his workplace and confiscated his mobile phone that the indecent images were uncovered." The court detailed that Sweet possessed a total of 162 images and 69 videos classified as Category A, indicating the most severe material; 103 images and 44 videos in Category B; and 272 images along with 13 videos in Category C.
The victims ranged in age from six months to 13 years.
Sweet, who has no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.
Judge Stephen Earl sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete a sexual offenders treatment program.
Additionally, Sweet is required to register as a sex offender for ten years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
Addressing the court, Judge Earl remarked, "The children in these images have been victimized and continue to be while these images remain accessible and people continue to watch them." In his interview with probation officers, Sweet claimed he did not download the images but stated no one else had access to his phone.
His lawyer, Jennifer Coxon, affirmed, "He fully accepts the prosecution’s case and maintains his guilty plea." Coxon also noted, "The images were found in an inaccessible location, which suggests they were either deleted or created via software.
Sweet is a hardworking individual with a stable long-term relationship and no children of his own."
