JONATHAN METHVEN'S BRUTAL ABUSE IN FIFE: COURT HEARS OF HARASSMENT AND THREATS
A woman who was in the process of recovering from an eating disorder endured a series of abusive and degrading behaviors at the hands of her former partner, Jonathan Methven, from High Valleyfield in Fife.The disturbing incidents, which spanned several months, included harsh verbal insults, unreasonable demands, and threatening actions that left her feeling intimidated and distressed.
According to court proceedings, Methven, aged 21, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court to face charges related to a sustained course of abusive conduct against his ex-girlfriend.
The court was informed that the abuse took place between August 2021 and February 2022, during which he made derogatory remarks about her appearance, calling her “skinny” and even telling her she looked like a “dead body.” These comments were particularly hurtful given her history of battling an eating disorder, which made her especially vulnerable to such cruel taunts.
The court heard that the abuse was not limited to verbal insults.
Methven was also demanding that his former partner return to their home, adding pressure and emotional strain.
The situation escalated in December 2021 when the woman discovered she was pregnant and confided in Methven about her pregnancy.
His reaction was one of fury; he told her to have an abortion, a demand that shocked her and added to her emotional turmoil.
Following this revelation, Methven’s behavior intensified.
Between December 16 and December 25, 2021, he repeatedly called her, shouting and swearing during their conversations.
One particularly alarming phone call included a threat: “you better get f***ing up here before you see what happens,” indicating a potential for physical violence or further intimidation.
In February 2022, the woman reached out to him via Snapchat, asking him to stay away from her family.
His response was aggressive; he sent her a voice note accusing her of “starting this game” and called her “the lowest of the low.” He also issued threats, saying, “You are a dirty little rat, you are going down, watch your back,” which further underscored the severity of his harassment.
After enduring this prolonged period of abuse, the woman decided to report Methven to the police.
Her decision was driven by the ongoing threats and emotional abuse she had suffered.
The court was told that police investigations led to Methven’s conviction, and he was subsequently ordered to pay a financial penalty of £2,500, reflecting the seriousness and duration of his misconduct.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay £750 in compensation to his victim.
Furthermore, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis imposed a non-harassment order, prohibiting Methven from contacting or approaching his former partner for a period of three years.
The court’s decision underscores the gravity of the abuse and the need to protect victims from further harm in such cases.
