JONATHAN MEALING SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS IN MANCHESTER FOR PREDATORY SEXUAL CRIMES AND ABUSE
An individual known as Jonathan Mealing has been sentenced to a significant prison term of 30 years following a series of serious criminal acts committed against multiple women in Manchester.The conviction, which includes 17 separate charges, was handed down after a jury found him guilty of a pattern of controlling, manipulative, and sexually abusive behaviors, including numerous rapes.
The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about Mealing, a 52-year-old man from Whitefield, Bury, who believed himself entitled to exert control over women.
He reportedly subjected his victims to relentless sexual demands, often forcing them into sexual acts at any hour—day or night—without their consent.
During the trial, it was disclosed that he told at least one victim that it was her duty to comply with his sexual expectations.
His control extended beyond sexual coercion, as he dictated who victims could contact, what they could wear, and even how much they could eat.
When victims resisted, Mealing's responses grew aggressive and violent, adding a layer of physical abuse to his psychological manipulation.
The judge emphasized the severity of Mealing’s offenses by imposing a sentence of 30 years in prison, complemented by an extended license period of eight years.
This lengthy sentence reflects the court’s view of his actions as not only criminal but also particularly predatory and abusive.
In her remarks, the judge pointed out the heinous nature of his crimes, describing the behavior as a campaign of exploitation targeted entirely at his victims, who were deliberately made to feel powerless.
Prosecutor Huw Edwards outlined the extent of Mealing’s control over his victims.
He detailed how Mealing confiscated a driving license from his first victim and prevented her from using her mobile phone.
He belittled her, physically assaulted her, and deprived her of food, effectively dominating every aspect of her daily life.
His abuse included repeated sexual demands, with evidence suggesting that he raped her even while she was asleep.
Another woman, the second victim, was kept isolated from her family and friends, with Mealing asserting control over her interactions and movements.
During the trial, references were made to him as “Prince Charming,” which contrasted sharply with his true nature.
When she expressed her dislike for the sexual acts, he dismissed her feelings by stating, “Well I like it,” and insisted that she perform oral sex on him, asserting she was not permitted to refuse.
He later sexually assaulted her.
The third woman endured even more severe coercion.
Mealing forced her to leave her job, accusing her of infidelity, and took control of her bank accounts.
An upsetting incident occurred during a supermarket shopping trip, where CCTV footage captured her making a hand gesture associated with domestic violence—an act misunderstood by outsiders as it was not widely recognized.
The court confirmed that Mealing raped her twice, further intensifying the gravity of his offenses.
Judge John Potter, who presided over the case, remarked on the victim impact statements, noting that the first victim’s account was particularly harrowing.
It was also revealed that Mealing had at least one previous conviction related to domestic violence dating back to 1993.
During proceedings, defense counsel Iain Simkin argued that Mealing continued to deny any wrongdoing and that this would be his first time experiencing incarceration, which he would undoubtedly suffer.
However, the judge condemned his behavior, describing it as a clear pattern of serial, predatory abuse towards women.
He stated, “You viewed each of your victims as little more than objects to be exploited to satisfy your selfish and misogynistic desires.
You rapidly persuaded each to share intimacy with you and then tried to destroy their independence, control their contacts, and threaten or use violence if they resisted.” The judge further emphasized the dangerousness of Mealing, declaring him a significant threat to others with no remorse or insight into the harm caused.
As a result, measures such as lifelong registration on the Sex Offenders Register and restraining orders were imposed.
He will serve at least 20 years in prison before being considered for parole, which means he could remain under supervision or in custody until the age of 90.
Detective Sergeant Steve Horton, from GMP’s Bury district, commented on the case, praising the bravery of the victims who provided the evidence needed for conviction.
He expressed hope that the verdict would bring some sense of closure to those affected.
Additionally, he issued a call to others experiencing coercive control or sexual abuse, urging them to contact police or support services.
Greater Manchester Police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting victims and bringing offenders like Mealing to justice, emphasizing their dedication to safeguarding vulnerable individuals from similar abuse in future.
