JONATHAN MCLEAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE IN RUNCORN
In December 2019, a disturbing case unfolded in Runcorn involving Jonathan McLean, a 31-year-old man whose actions have left a lasting scar on a young victim.McLean, residing on Masseyfield Road, Brookvale, was accused of heinous acts of child abuse that he vehemently denied, yet the jury found him guilty of six separate charges during a trial held in November.
These charges included four counts of inappropriate touching, one count of sexual assault, and one count of incitement to engage in sexual activity.
The court heard how McLean had manipulated and threatened his young victim, warning them that a 'ghost' would come and take them away if they disclosed the abuse to anyone.
Such threats were used to instill fear and silence the child, effectively controlling their actions and preventing them from seeking help.
At the sentencing hearing held at Chester Crown Court, the gravity of McLean’s crimes was underscored by the prosecution.
Anna Pope, the lead prosecutor, detailed how concerns about the child's changing behavior prompted investigations.
The victim, whose identity remains protected, exhibited signs of emotional distress, including withdrawal, loss of appetite, weight loss, and a disinterest in activities they once enjoyed, such as reading.
These behavioral shifts raised suspicions that the child had been subjected to violence or abuse.
It was during a moment of emotional vulnerability that the victim confided in a trusted individual, revealing the horrifying details of McLean’s threats and abuse.
The child recounted how McLean had warned them that a 'ghost' would take them away if they told anyone, a tactic that served to terrify and silence the young person.
The court was also presented with heartbreaking evidence of the emotional trauma inflicted, with the NSPCC providing therapy to aid the victim’s recovery.
Furthermore, the victim had to relive the traumatic memories by attending court proceedings, which was a painful process compounded by McLean’s denial of the allegations.
In addressing the case, Judge Thompson emphasized that the victim’s 'extreme youth' was an aggravating factor, reflecting the vulnerability of the child and the severity of the abuse.
The defense argued that McLean had no prior convictions and that this was his first time in custody.
They also challenged the prosecution’s proposed sentencing category, questioning whether the victim was a 'toddler.' However, the judge dismissed these arguments, reaffirming that the child's age significantly heightened the seriousness of the case.
Ultimately, McLean was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison.
This sentence comprised 14 years of incarceration with an additional year on extended licence, meaning that if he reoffends, he could be recalled and serve the full term behind bars.
He will be eligible to apply for parole after serving seven years.
Additionally, McLean was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed, restricting him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under 18.
Throughout the proceedings, Judge Thompson expressed appreciation for the conduct of those present in the courtroom, including the public gallery, and commended Cheshire police for their professional handling of the case.
