JONATHAN HARKIN'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN CARNFORTH AND SETTLE: A TALE OF TRAGEDY AND CONTROVERSY

In September 2002, a disturbing revelation emerged involving Jonathan Harkin, a man from Carnforth, who has become a figure of intense public and legal scrutiny due to his complex and controversial history. Harkin, a former swimming pool manager and known community member from Stanley Street, Carnforth, was previously convicted of serious crimes, including rape, false imprisonment, and threats to kill. His case has sparked widespread debate and ongoing campaigns for justice and innocence.

Harkin was sentenced to seven years in prison for his conviction, but he has since been released on parole halfway through his term. He is currently awaiting the outcome of his case being reviewed by the criminal cases review board, as supporters continue to rally behind him, claiming he is innocent and that his conviction was a miscarriage of justice. The community of Carnforth, along with supporters from nearby towns such as Settle, have shown unwavering support, emphasizing their belief in his character and innocence.

Harkin’s case is further complicated by his association with Harold Shipman, the notorious serial killer who murdered over 200 patients. During a prison interview at Preston Prison, Harkin, then 43, recounted his interactions with Shipman, who was on remand at Preston following his arrest in 1998. Harkin, a father of five and a trained Samaritan listener, spent twelve face-to-face sessions with Shipman, during which the doctor reportedly made chilling confessions about his crimes.

Harkin described the environment in Preston Prison, noting that Shipman was under suicide watch and was placed in a cell with him for protection. He recounted that Shipman’s moods fluctuated dramatically, influenced by who had seen him that day. According to Harkin, Shipman appeared proud when he claimed to have been killing for the past 25 years, dating back to his days in Todmorden. During their conversations, Shipman allegedly referred to his murders as “acts of God” and claimed, with a sense of grandeur, that he had “the power” to take lives. Harkin was visibly disturbed by these revelations, describing the encounter as frightening and intense.

Harkin’s account of Shipman’s confession included the chilling statement that he had killed 508 people, a number that seemed almost unbelievable to Harkin. Shipman’s words, as recounted by Harkin, lacked remorse and showed no regard for the victims, which added to the unsettling nature of the confession. A source from Preston Prison confirmed that Harkin and Shipman were incarcerated at the same time, and that Harkin had been held at the city jail during Shipman’s stay.

Harold Shipman was convicted in 2000 at Preston Crown Court for the murders of 15 elderly women. Despite his conviction, Shipman has never admitted guilt, and an extensive inquiry led by Dame Janet Smith examined 888 cases, ultimately concluding that Shipman was responsible for the deaths of 171 women and 44 men. He is now serving a life sentence at Frankland Prison in County Durham.

Meanwhile, Harkin’s legal battles continue. In January 1999, he was convicted at Preston Crown Court of rape, false imprisonment, and threats to kill. His conviction shocked the community of Settle, where he was well regarded, especially among those involved in community activities such as swimming and youth programs. Many residents, including elderly members of Age Concern and families involved in water safety sessions, expressed their support for Harkin, believing he was innocent and that he deserved a fair chance at justice.

Supporters, led by Jean Lonsdale of Langcliffe, have been actively campaigning for his release, gathering over 200 signatures and numerous letters from community members who trust his character. They argue that Harkin’s reputation has been unfairly tarnished and that he has been a positive influence in the community, often helping with swimming lessons and youth activities. Lonsdale emphasized that many in the community have known Harkin for years and continue to believe in his innocence, despite the legal verdicts against him.

Harkin’s supporters highlight his conduct during incarceration, noting that he has been respected by prison staff and fellow inmates. He chose to remain on a regular wing rather than protected accommodation, demonstrating his resilience and desire to maintain normalcy. They hope that his upcoming parole hearing will result in his release, potentially by the end of October, allowing him to reintegrate into society and continue his community work.

Harkin’s case remains a subject of intense debate, with many in the community of Carnforth and Settle advocating for justice and fairness. His story is intertwined with the tragic and infamous history of Harold Shipman, adding layers of complexity and controversy to his ongoing legal and personal struggles.
