SWANSEA MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR DOMESTIC HOMICIDE
Jonathan Campbell, aged 37, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his partner, Helen Bannister. The court heard that Campbell subjected Helen to what was described as a "ferocious and merciless" attack at their home in Swansea on December 1 of the previous year.
Helen, aged 48, suffered extensive injuries, including brain trauma, swelling, bleeding, fractured ribs, a fractured eye socket, nasal fracture, and a collapsed lung.
She died five days later from her injuries.
Campbell pleaded guilty to the charge of murder and claimed he had "snapped" after accusing Helen of infidelity.
Evidence presented in court revealed that Campbell had a history of violence against women, with three previous abuse-related charges, including a battery case involving Helen in 2017.
During the incident, Campbell called an ambulance and admitted to hitting Helen while she lay unconscious on the sofa.
Instead of seeking help immediately, he bought two bottles of wine, met up with another woman, and spent the day drinking and smoking cannabis.
The judge sentenced him to a minimum of 18 years, condemning his actions as "a drunken, ferocious, sustained and merciless assault," and emphasized that he had left Helen "unconscious, alone, without help and you left her dying." The police and prosecutors condemned Campbell's conduct, acknowledging the terror and physical harm inflicted upon Helen, and expressed hope that the sentence would bring some solace to her family whose lives have been irreparably changed by this tragic event.
