August 2010 Jon Paul Newell jailed for sexual offences against a child An Abbots Langley man has been jailed after admitting to a string of sexual offences against a child. Paedophile Jon Paul Newell, 47, who had relocated to Slaidburn Avenue, Rawtenstall, Lancashire, was sentenced to three years in custody at St Albans Crown Court on Monday, August 2. At a hearing held on July 9, Newell pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child and three counts of assault by penetration on his female victim. He had carried out the offences in Abbots Langley over a period of time. For the counts of sexual activity with a child he received three sentences of 18 months in custody to run concurrently, and for the three counts of assault by penetration he received 18 months to run concurrently for each account. He has also been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. A Sexual Offences Prevention Order was agreed relating to the future safeguarding of children within the community upon his release. Detective Inspector Paul Doran, from the child abuse investigation unit, said: “The sentence given to Jon Paul Newell is a positive result for the appalling offences he committed against his young victim. “It serves as a clear message that this type of activity will not be tolerated in Hertfordshire and we will thoroughly investigate all allegations to ensure those responsible for committing such cowardly acts are brought to justice.”
