JOHNATHON MALLON AND HIS SHOCKING 13-YEAR REIGN OF TERROR IN GLASGOW
A man identified as Johnathon Mallon has been sentenced to life imprisonment following a series of heinous crimes spanning over a decade in Glasgow.The convicted offender was responsible for a disturbing campaign of sexual violence, primarily targeting vulnerable women he met through various social settings, including church events, parties, and casual encounters on public transportation.
Over a period of thirteen years, from December 1999 to March 2013, Mallon committed multiple sexual offences, including rapes and sexual abuse against six women.
Among his victims, one was a 21-year-old woman who was assaulted at multiple addresses in Paisley, Renfrew, and Greenock.
His crimes included forcing a 31-year-old woman to perform a sexual act at her home in Paisley.
The case came to light after a lengthy trial held at the High Court in Glasgow, where Mallon was found guilty of five counts of rape and additional sexual offences against a sixth woman.
His method of attack varied, with incidents ranging from a sexual assault in the toilet of a busy cinema on Glasgow’s Renfield Street to a rape in a changing cubicle at Scotstoun Swimming Baths.
Each of his victims, now aged between 21 and 31, was described by authorities as particularly vulnerable, making Mallon’s actions all the more reprehensible.
In delivering his judgment, Justice Bill Dunlop QC expressed strong condemnation of Mallon’s conduct.
He announced that Mallon would serve a minimum of ten years before being eligible to apply for parole, emphasizing the monstrous nature of the offences.
The judge stated, “This was a course of conduct that can only be described as monstrous.
These offences were carried out against six women, each of whom was vulnerable in one way or another.
It’s clear that you saw women who were vulnerable and ruthlessly exploited them for your own sexual gratification.” Justice Dunlop also remarked on the emotional impact of Mallon’s crimes, noting that the victims had been left “devastated” and that their suffering was apparent at the time.
He did not hold back in criticizing Mallon for ignoring their distress, highlighting his callousness.
The prosecutor, Kath Harper, provided additional context by revealing Mallon’s criminal history, which includes convictions for domestic abuse, violence, carrying a knife, and fire-raising.
Court evidence detailed how Mallon employed manipulation, initially charming his victims before quickly becoming controlling and aggressive.
The courtroom was informed that two victims were met at church functions, another was approached on a bus, while others encountered him at social parties.
One of the more disturbing testimonies came from a 21-year-old woman who described Mallon’s persistent demands for sexual acts, sometimes multiple times a day.
She recounted her struggle to resist, explaining, “If I said I didn’t want sex, he just didn’t listen.
He would say ‘I’m horny’ and just go on and on about wanting sex.
I would try to push him away but he was just too strong.” Another victim, aged 26, shared her harrowing experience of being raped in a public swimming pool's changing room, in the Scotstoun area of Glasgow, with families and children nearby.
She described the incident, saying, “The place was really full of kids.
I said ‘no’ and he told me, ‘You know what will happen, don’t create a scene.’ I said ‘you can’t, not here’ and he just told me to shut up.
Afterwards, he said, ‘do you know what I’ve just done to you?
I’ve raped you,’ and he seemed to be gloating.” A third victim, whose account was read aloud in court, was a woman who had died since the assault.
Her police statement detailed how Mallon raped her inside the men's toilets at the Odeon cinema located in Renfield Street, Glasgow.
She told police she had begged him to stop, insisting she did not want to be raped in a public restroom, but he continued anyway.
She also revealed that Mallon forced her into sexual acts with a pensioner, offering her a disturbing account of being instructed to have sex with the old man after Mallon bathed him, despite her protests about the man’s hygiene.
The statement further disclosed that Mallon raped her subsequent to her pregnancy.
Throughout the trial, Mallon maintained his innocence, claiming all sexual acts were consensual.
His defense attorney, Frances McMenamin, argued that Mallon’s troubled childhood and history of being physically assaulted himself played a role in his behavior.
Despite this, the court’s findings led to his life sentence.
Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Mark McGowan, the lead officer in the investigation from Renfrew police, expressed satisfaction that justice had been served.
He stated, “Hopefully, we have given these women justice.
Mallon is a calculating individual, who preyed on the vulnerability of his victims—initially luring them into what they thought were genuine relationships, only to carry out horrific acts on each of them.”
