JOHNATHAN WOODSIDE SENT TO JAIL FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF VULNERABLE GIRL IN BELFAST
In October 2017, a man from Belfast, Johnathan Woodside, was sentenced to prison for grooming and sexually abusing a young girl who was only 14 years old at the time.The case was heard at Belfast Crown Court, where it was revealed that Woodside, aged 34, had engaged in a series of inappropriate and criminal acts over a span of several months, targeting a girl described as vulnerable due to her mental and emotional development.
According to court proceedings, the misconduct came to light after the girl’s father discovered sexually explicit messages exchanged between his daughter and Woodside on her Facebook account.
This discovery prompted an investigation that uncovered the extent of Woodside’s offending.
The court was told that Woodside’s criminal behavior took place between September 2013 and January 2014, a period during which he committed six separate offences.
Judge Patricia Smyth, presiding over the case, sentenced Woodside to two years and three months in prison.
She emphasized the gravity of his actions, stating, “You exploited a crush that the complainant developed in order to feed your own sexual preoccupation and fantasies at the time.” The judge also made it clear that Woodside’s actions were a clear abuse of trust and a serious breach of the girl’s safety.
During the trial, it was established that Woodside had persuaded the girl to send him indecent images of herself.
He also admitted to causing her to engage in sexual activity with him.
The victim, who attended a special school due to her mental impairment, believed she was in a romantic relationship with Woodside, which highlights her vulnerability.
She has been described as socially and emotionally immature, with basic speech, language, and learning difficulties, making her particularly susceptible to manipulation.
The sexual abuse took place in multiple locations, including both the girl’s and Woodside’s homes, as well as in a car park at Cavehill.
The court heard that the communication between Woodside and the girl was extensive, involving more than 100 phone calls, approximately 30 text messages, and interactions on Facebook and WhatsApp, indicating a sustained and manipulative relationship.
Judge Smyth pointed out that Woodside was fully aware of the girl’s age and her vulnerable state when he initiated this inappropriate relationship.
She stated, “There is no doubt he was aware of her age and her vulnerability when he started this relationship.” The seriousness of the offences was underscored by the judge, who acknowledged that while Woodside had no prior offending record and the Probation Board did not consider him a risk to the public, the nature of his crimes was nonetheless grave.
As part of his sentence, Woodside was ordered to serve half of his prison term before being released on licence.
Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years and subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) for the same period.
The court’s decision reflects the ongoing concern for public safety and the protection of vulnerable individuals from similar harm in the future.
