JOHNATHAN PHILLIPS AND LAURA PITTMAN FROM FERNDALE, SOUTH WALES, SENTENCED OVER CRUELTY TO EXOTIC MARMOSAT

In a distressing case that has drawn significant attention from animal welfare authorities, Johnathan Phillips and Laura Pittman, residents of Brynhyfryd Terrace in Ferndale, South Wales, faced justice after their neglect led to the suffering and eventual euthanasia of their pet marmoset named Precious.

Precious, a white-faced Geoffroy’s marmoset monkey, was found in a state of severe distress at the couple’s home. The RSPCA was called to the residence after reports of the animal’s screaming and inability to walk. Upon arrival, deputy chief inspector Gemma Cooper observed the monkey exhibiting chaotic and unpredictable behavior, including rolling around and vocalizing loudly. The scene was heartbreaking, revealing a pet that was clearly in pain and distress.

Veterinary examination confirmed that Precious was suffering from advanced metabolic bone disease, a condition caused by calcium and vitamin D3 deficiency. The X-ray images showed the extent of her suffering, with the veterinarian noting that she was dragging herself and unable to climb or leap, behaviors that are natural for her species. Tragically, despite efforts to save her, the vet advised that euthanasia was the most humane option to prevent further suffering. Precious was put to sleep on veterinary recommendation.

The investigation revealed that the couple had failed to provide proper care for their exotic pet. They admitted in court that they had not researched how to care for a marmoset before acquiring her. Their feeding regimen was inadequate, consisting mainly of yoghurt, dried and fresh fruit, and mealworms, which do not supply the necessary nutrients such as live insects, fresh vegetables, and gum arabic that are essential for a marmoset’s health. Additionally, the enclosure at their home was deemed unsuitable, lacking the space and environmental conditions needed for a primate of her kind.

Further concerns were raised about the social needs of the species. The court heard that Precious was kept alone, despite her natural inclination to live in social groups, which likely contributed to her distress and health decline. The RSPCA emphasized that marmosets are wild animals that do not belong in domestic settings, especially without proper knowledge and facilities.

Following the court proceedings, Johnathan Phillips and Laura Pittman were found guilty of two charges under the Animal Welfare Act. They received a 12-month community order, including a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Each was fined £350 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £140. The total costs of approximately £1,931.92 were also imposed on them. Most notably, they were banned from owning any animals for a period of ten years, a restriction that will last until November 2033.

Commenting on the case, Ms. Cooper expressed her sadness over the incident, describing it as a tragic example of individuals acquiring exotic animals impulsively without understanding their complex needs. Dr. Ros Clubb, head of wildlife at the RSPCA, reinforced this sentiment, stating that marmosets are wild animals that do not belong in human homes and should be left in their natural habitats where they can thrive.
