JOHN WILLIAMSON'S HORRIFIC ONLINE PREDATION IN DURHAM REVEALED

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Durham, John Williamson, a 28-year-old man, was found guilty of engaging in a series of heinous online activities involving underage girls.

The proceedings at Durham Crown Court uncovered a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned over several months, highlighting the dangers of online grooming and exploitation.

According to the court, Williamson initially believed he was communicating with a 12-year-old girl named Holly on a popular chat application in late March 2022.

He introduced himself as a 26-year-old man, matching his real age at the time, and was told from the outset that Holly was only 12 years old.

Prosecutor Paul Newcombe detailed how Williamson quickly shifted the conversation towards sexual topics after a few introductory exchanges, requesting images of Holly and sending explicit photographs of himself.

Despite Holly's innocent responses, Williamson persisted, making five additional requests for explicit images.

Williamson's arrest came in April 2022, following police investigations.

During police interviews, he chose to remain silent and was subsequently released under investigation.

However, he did not cease his offending behavior.

Instead, he continued to engage in similar online chats with three other girls, all purportedly aged 13, where he repeatedly asked them to send sexual images and suggested they should engage in sexual activities.

These interactions were also with police decoys, as part of an undercover operation.

Further complicating the case, Williamson was re-arrested in January 2023.

During this second arrest, he denied any involvement with the chat room app, claiming that a cousin—who was later revealed to be a fictitious character—was responsible for the offenses.

Police also uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent images on devices seized from Williamson, including 71 images classified as the most serious category.

These images depicted children as young as five being abused, alongside two images of extreme pornography involving bestiality.

Williamson, who resides on Pine Avenue in Durham, pleaded guilty to multiple charges.

He admitted to four counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, three counts of possessing indecent images of a child, and two counts of possessing extreme pornography.

Additionally, he requested that 20 further charges related to attempted sexual communication with minors be taken into consideration during sentencing.

Throughout the trial, it was emphasized that all interactions with the decoys were with police officers posing as underage girls.

The court highlighted the aggravating factors, notably Williamson’s persistent attempts to solicit images even after his initial arrest, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the law and the safety of minors.

Prosecutor Newcombe pointed out that Williamson’s behavior was among the worst he had encountered, especially given his continued offending despite being warned.

Defense attorney Robin Patton acknowledged the severity of Williamson’s actions but argued that his life would be significantly impacted post-release due to the monitoring and restrictions imposed by the sex offenders’ management unit and the Probation Service.

Patton described Williamson as a man of previously good character who had been remanded into custody for the past six months and emphasized that he had never physically met a child during his offending.

Judge Geoffrey Marson delivered a stern judgment, condemning Williamson’s actions as a “catalogue of persistent and serious offending,” despite no physical harm having been inflicted on any child.

The judge noted that Williamson genuinely believed the girls he communicated with were real and of a young age, revealing a clear sexual interest in children that he was currently unable to control.

The possession of extreme and child abuse images further underscored the severity of his case.

In sentencing, Judge Marson imposed a total prison term of three years.

He stated that Williamson would serve up to half of this sentence in custody before being released on license.

Additionally, Williamson was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely.

The court also ordered the devices seized during the investigation to be forfeited and destroyed, aiming to prevent further misuse or distribution of harmful material.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
