RUNCORN MAN JOHN WHITFIELD SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTER GROUP

In August 2019, a man from Runcorn named John Whitfield was apprehended following an operation by a paedophile hunter group.

The group had set up a fake online profile to lure individuals attempting to engage in inappropriate activities with minors.

Whitfield, aged 32, became the subject of this sting when he initiated contact with what he believed was a 12-year-old girl on Facebook.

The incident took place between May 4 and May 13, during which Whitfield sent numerous sexually explicit messages to the fake profile.

The 'girl' was part of an online trap operated by the Net Justice Group, an organization dedicated to catching online predators.

The group’s adult members managed the profile, which was designed to appear as a young girl to attract potential offenders.

According to the court proceedings at Chester Crown Court, prosecutor Bernard Byrne detailed how Whitfield had asked the girl her age and continued to communicate with her almost daily, despite her explicitly stating she was only 12 years old.

The messages escalated in their explicitness, with Whitfield sending photographs and videos of his genitalia and requesting similar explicit images from the girl.

Whitfield, who resides on Lingfield Road in Runcorn, admitted to adding the young girl as a Facebook friend.

He claimed that he was intoxicated at the time of the contact, which he acknowledged as a mistake.

During the hearing, Whitfield expressed remorse, admitting that he felt ashamed of his actions.

It was also noted that he has no prior convictions related to similar offences.

Recognizing the seriousness of the case, the court was informed that Whitfield is currently seeking help for alcohol dependency through the Pathways program.

Despite his efforts to address his issues, the judge, Simon Berkson, emphasized the need to protect the public from potential harm.

As part of his sentence, Whitfield was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing future offences.

Judge Berkson stated, “These terms are to protect the public from serious sexual harm.” He further remarked, “You thought she was a real-life 12-year-old girl.

These disgusting events were uncovered when the evidence was obtained after you were arrested.” The judge acknowledged the pre-sentence report, which highlighted underlying problems in Whitfield’s life, but ultimately concluded that the gravity of the offence warranted immediate custody.

Consequently, Whitfield was sentenced to three years in prison for his actions, reflecting the court’s stance on the severity of such offences and the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation.
