JOHN WHITEHEAD OF YORK SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS FOR ABUSE OF CHILDREN IN YORK

In a case that has left a lasting scar on the community of York, John Whitehead, a man aged 79 from Kexby Avenue, off Hull Road, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse involving young children.

The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of his crimes, which spanned several years and affected at least four victims, two of whom courageously came forward to share their stories.

During the hearing at York Crown Court, it was disclosed that Whitehead’s actions had inflicted deep psychological and emotional trauma on his victims, some of whom had endured decades of suffering in silence.

The court heard that Whitehead’s abuse was so severe that one of his victims, who had initially remained silent, finally decided to break her silence after years of torment.

Her testimony was instrumental in bringing Whitehead to justice.

One of the victims, who was very young at the time of the abuse, described the profound impact Whitehead’s actions had on her life.

She stated, “What he did was evil.

That’s the way people like him are.

They prey on you, they lie through their teeth.” She emphasized the importance of children speaking out against abuse, urging young victims to confide in trusted adults such as parents or teachers.

She explained that abusers often manipulate children into silence by making them feel that no one will believe them, and she recounted her own experience of being terrified to tell her parents about the abuse.

She recalled that Whitehead had falsely promised her that if she submitted to his demands, he would not harm other children.

She revealed that her abuse began when she was still too young to fully understand her feelings, and the trauma has left a permanent mark on her life.

Despite her fears, she eventually confided in her mother, who believed her immediately.

Now a parent herself, she passionately advocates for children to trust their instincts and speak out against abuse, asserting that children are often aware of inappropriate sexual behavior at a young age.

The second victim, who was also a child at the time, was too frightened to report the abuse initially, which meant Whitehead was not charged at that time.

However, three years ago, he saw children playing near his home and felt compelled to report his suspicions to the police.

He explained, “It has been preying in my head for years.

I felt guilty that if I didn’t say anything, he might do it again.

I’ve had a long sentence.

It was awful, it has affected us so badly.” Whitehead’s criminal activities came to light after one of his victims provided evidence at the start of his trial, leading to his conviction.

The court found him guilty of 20 offences, including indecent assault and gross indecency.

Despite his pleas, Whitehead only admitted guilt after the evidence was presented.

Judge Sean Morris, the Recorder of York, addressed Whitehead directly, stating that he had shown no remorse for his actions.

The judge emphasized the lasting damage inflicted on the victims, noting, “What you did has made people traumatised and they have had to live with this for years and years and years.

They are going to go on living with it for years and years and years.

Mental strife can be so much more difficult and harmful than mere physical illness.” Legal representative Andrew Semple highlighted Whitehead’s poor health and the significant likelihood that he would spend the remainder of his life in prison, with the court sentencing him to 17 years behind bars plus an additional year’s license.

The case has left a profound impact on the community of York, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and speaking out against abuse.
