JOHN WATT'S BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE IN DUNFERMLINE: VICTIMS TELL THEIR HORRIFIC STORIES
John Watt, aged 34, appeared in court yesterday to plead guilty to multiple severe charges of domestic assault that spanned over a decade within the Dunfermline area. The case was heard at the High Court in Edinburgh, where prosecutors detailed a disturbing pattern of violence and control exerted by Watt over several women he was involved with over the years.According to the court proceedings, Watt initially presented himself as a caring and affectionate partner, showering his victims with kindness and gifts. However, this facade quickly dissolved as he descended into violent and abusive behavior, treating the women as if they were mere punchbags. The court heard that Watt’s violence intensified over time, with victims describing terrifying episodes of physical assault.
One of the victims, Ms Hynd, became especially frightened after discovering she was pregnant with Watt’s child. Prosecutor David Taylor explained that Ms Hynd feared that if she kept the pregnancy, she would never be free from Watt’s control. She chose to terminate the pregnancy but told Watt she had suffered a miscarriage, fearing his reaction if he learned the truth about the termination.
The court also recounted Watt’s first known victim, Claire Hunter, whom he targeted in January 1999. Ms Hunter told police that Watt initially appeared charming, even buying her chocolates. However, his demeanor soon changed, and he became increasingly controlling. The violence escalated from slapping to punching, with Ms Hunter describing how Watt would pull her hair, physically assault her, and kick her legs. She recounted that during these assaults, Watt’s face would sometimes be overtaken by an 'evil look,' highlighting the terrifying nature of his rage.
Watt’s second known victim, Lynsey Harley, aged 32, began dating him in 1999. She was initially attracted to his 'bad boy' image and his charm. Unfortunately, her relationship with Watt turned abusive, with physical violence occurring at a flat on Broomhead Drive in Dunfermline. After their relationship ended, Watt moved on to date Ms Hynd, with whom he was involved for six months in 2002.
In 2004, Watt was involved with Danielle Sharp, aged 28, who also suffered physical abuse at his hands. The court heard that Watt exerted complete control over her life, dictating who she could see, what she could wear, and even forcibly taking and smashing her phone if she spoke to others he disapproved of. Danielle described Watt as initially charming but quickly becoming oppressive and violent.
Another victim, Samantha Barrie, aged 36, was in a relationship with Watt for six months in 2004. On May 20, 2004, Watt assaulted her so severely that she sustained two fractured ribs. The court also heard about Watt’s relationship with Patricia Park, aged 28, which lasted until 2013. Watt subjected her to multiple assaults during their time together, with the violence ceasing only after her father contacted police. The authorities then launched an investigation, reaching out to Watt’s former partners and gathering enough evidence to bring him to justice.
Following the culmination of these investigations, Watt was arrested and charged. He ultimately admitted to the charges and was sentenced to four years in prison for his series of serious domestic assault offenses committed in Dunfermline from 1999 through 2013.
