JOHN THURLBECK FROM SUNDERLAND SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SCHOOLGIRL
In March 2020, a brave schoolgirl from Sunderland demonstrated remarkable courage by coming forward to report a disturbing incident of sexual assault involving a known predator. The teenage victim had been targeted by John Thurlbeck, a 61-year-old convicted sex offender, who had been regularly engaging her in inappropriate conversations as she made her way to school each day.
Initially, the girl did not pay much attention to Thurlbeck’s behavior, dismissing his actions as harmless.
However, her unease grew over time as Thurlbeck’s conduct became increasingly intrusive.
She noticed that he would often loiter at the top of his street every morning, seemingly waiting for her to pass by.
This pattern of behavior caused her concern and discomfort, but she continued her routine until the situation escalated.
Over the course of three months, their brief interactions intensified.
On one particular morning, Thurlbeck crossed a line by asking for her phone number and then inappropriately rubbing her thigh.
The girl, frightened and overwhelmed by his actions, decided to confide in her mother.
Her mother immediately contacted the police to report the incident, leading to Thurlbeck’s swift arrest.
John Thurlbeck, who was then residing without a fixed address but was previously known to live in Washington, was taken into custody and charged with sexual assault.
Additionally, he faced charges for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which had been imposed in July 2010 after Thurlbeck attempted to meet a child following a period of sexual grooming.
The court proceedings culminated in Thurlbeck pleading guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court.
Following his conviction, Thurlbeck was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
His case highlights the importance of vigilance and the bravery of victims who come forward to ensure that predators like Thurlbeck are held accountable for their actions.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for protective measures and community awareness to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
