April 2013 John Sutherland jailed for sex attacks on young girls A serial sex offender has been jailed for 11 years for raping a young girl and the attempted rape of another. John Sutherland, 39, was convicted of carrying out the attacks on his victims at properties in Glasgow’s south side during the 1980s and 1990s. The High Court in Glasgow heard that he was jailed for 12 months in 2001 and 18 months in 2006 for sex offences. He was also jailed for 21 months last year at Hull Crown Court and put on the sex offenders register for 10 years. Jailing Sutherland, temporary judge Rita Rae QC told him that he was “clearly a serious risk to children”. She told Sutherland: “The young women who gave evidence were very brave to do so. What you did to them has had a devastating effect on their lives.” The judge also commented on a remark Sutherland made to the victims in the courtroom after he was convicted last month. Sutherland shouted towards them at the time: “I am not finished with you yet.” Judge Rae said: “You have shown no remorse whatsoever and the threat is an insight to your complete lack of remorse.” The court heard that the young girl Sutherland raped was aged 12. He claimed that attack had been carried out by another man – who had also allegedly abused Sutherland.
