JOHN SUMNER FROM HARTLEPOOL JAILED FOR POSSESSING OVER 1,000 ILLEGAL CHILD IMAGES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Hartlepool community, John Sumner, a 55-year-old resident of Sheriff Street, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing a vast collection of indecent images of children. The investigation revealed that over a span of two years, Sumner amassed more than 1,000 illicit photographs of young boys, which he downloaded from the internet and kept in his home.
Teesside Crown Court heard that Sumner’s collection was not only extensive but also displayed in a disturbing manner.
It was revealed that he had created a collage of several of these illegal images and displayed it around the fireplace of his residence on Sheriff Street in Hartlepool.
This act of displaying such material underscores the severity of his misconduct and the extent of his obsession with these illegal images.
Earlier, in December 2013, Sumner appeared before Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court, where he admitted to multiple charges related to his possession and creation of indecent images.
Specifically, he pleaded guilty to 19 charges of making indecent photographs and pseudo photographs of children, which spanned from September 24, 2002, to February 2, 2004.
Additionally, he admitted to four counts of possessing indecent photographs and pseudo photographs, with the total number of images amounting to 1,080.
These four charges were linked to incidents that occurred on April 11 of the same year.
Following his guilty plea, magistrates decided to transfer the case to Teesside Crown Court for sentencing, recognizing the gravity of the offences.
Magistrate Esther Blakey, who presided over the case, ordered that Sumner be released on bail pending his sentencing hearing.
The date for the sentencing at Middlesbrough’s Crown Court has not yet been scheduled, leaving the community awaiting justice.
Sumner’s case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of illegal child exploitation material.
His actions, which have now led to his imprisonment, serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for strict legal measures to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
