Bowburn Child Sexual Abuser
In a recent case heard at Durham Crown Court, John Paul Robey, a lorry driver residing in Bowburn near Durham, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after being found guilty of possessing highly disturbing and indecent images of children. The investigation into Robey’s activities was initiated following a police visit to his residence on February 10, which was prompted by information gathered during a long-term inquiry into the online distribution and possession of child abuse images.
During the raid, law enforcement officials examined the hard drives taken from Robey’s home and discovered a total of 104 indecent images. Among these, 62 were video recordings, amounting to approximately 24 hours and 57 minutes of footage. The images and videos ranged in severity, with 45 classified within the most serious category, 32 of which were moving images. The content depicted children in various states of abuse, with some victims estimated to be between six months and three years old, while others appeared to be up to about 12 years old.
Prosecutor Stephen Littlewood detailed the findings, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the material. He explained that the images spanned a broad spectrum of severity, with a significant portion falling into the top bracket of depravity. The investigation revealed that Robey had been in possession of these images from April 2010 until February of this year, indicating a prolonged period of illicit activity.
Robey, aged 45 and residing on Bede Terrace in Bowburn, admitted to possessing indecent images of children. His defense lawyer, Paul Abrahams, highlighted that Robey has mild learning difficulties but has maintained a previously good character. The lawyer acknowledged that Robey had searched for and viewed these images for his own gratification, which he accepted would be the basis for his sentencing.
Judge Christopher Prince, presiding over the case, stated that due to the depraved nature of some of the images, an immediate custodial sentence was the only appropriate response. In addition to his prison term, Robey was ordered to be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will remain in effect until further notice. Furthermore, he is required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, underscoring the seriousness of his offenses and the ongoing risk posed by such behavior.
