JOHN NOLAN FROM BELFAST FACES JUSTICE IN NORTHERN IRELAND FOR DECADES-OLD SEX ABUSE CASES
In March 2014, a disturbing case involving John Nolan, a pensioner from Belfast, came to light as he was brought before Downpatrick Crown Court to face serious allegations of sexual abuse spanning over a decade.Nolan, aged 82 at the time, was accused of multiple offenses related to the sexual exploitation of a young girl, with incidents reportedly occurring between December 1974 and April 1984.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, Nolan was ultimately spared immediate imprisonment, receiving a sentence that was suspended due to his fragile health and advanced age.
Judge Piers Grant, presiding over the case, acknowledged the severity of Nolan’s actions but also expressed considerable mercy, citing the defendant’s medical condition as a significant factor.
Nolan was handed an 18-month jail sentence, which was suspended for three years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed further offenses within that period.
The judge emphasized that, although the crimes warranted a custodial sentence, Nolan’s deteriorating physical and mental health, including the onset of dementia, justified a more lenient approach.
During the proceedings, Nolan pleaded guilty to four sex offenses, including two counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency involving the young girl.
The court heard that the abuse included a particularly distressing incident where Nolan took the girl, then just seven years old, for a walk near his holiday home in Killough, County Down.
There, he laid a blanket on the ground and ordered her to strip and lie down, during which he touched her private parts.
The prosecuting lawyer, Sam Magee, described how the girl was crying throughout this ordeal.
Another incident involved the girl, around eight years old at the time, who was staying over at Nolan’s former residence on Cavehill Road.
During this sleepover, Nolan ordered her to strip and wash in the kitchen in front of him, further humiliating her.
These acts, committed over a span of years, revealed a pattern of predatory behavior that deeply disturbed the court.
While acknowledging the seriousness of Nolan’s offenses, Judge Grant highlighted several mitigating factors.
He pointed out the significant age difference between Nolan and his victim, the breach of trust inherent in the abuse, and the victim’s humiliation during the incidents.
The judge also noted Nolan’s clear criminal record and the fact that the offenses were historical, which led him to conclude that Nolan was not a “sexual predator” and did not pose a significant risk of reoffending.
Nonetheless, Nolan was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
In a related case from February 2014, Nolan faced the possibility of up to ten years in prison after admitting to abusing the girl over a period of more than ten years.
His legal team requested that the media be barred from reporting his identity, but Judge Piers Grant refused, asserting that the press had a duty to uphold the victim’s right to anonymity.
Nolan, residing on Bladen Drive in East Belfast, pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency involving a female child.
The court did not disclose specific details of the abuse but confirmed that the incidents occurred between December 1974 and April 1984.
Prior to being released on bail, Nolan was required to sign the sex offenders’ register.
The court adjourned sentencing until the following month to allow for a probation report and a victim impact statement, emphasizing the ongoing legal process and the serious nature of the allegations against him.
