JOHN NEWTON FROM WORKINGTON SENTENCED IN WEST CUMBRIA FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES

In a case that drew significant attention in West Cumbria, John Robert Newton, aged 29 and a resident of Workington, saw a reduction in his prison sentence following an appeal related to a serious sexual assault attempt. The incident in question occurred in 2014, involving a nine-year-old girl, and Newton was initially convicted and sentenced in July 2017.

Newton was originally handed down a 12-year prison term by Carlisle Crown Court, reflecting the gravity of his actions and the severity of his crimes. However, the Court of Appeal later reviewed his case, citing that the original sentence was 'manifestly excessive.' The appellate court acknowledged Newton's prior convictions, which included charges of indecent assault and voyeurism, adding context to his criminal history.

After the appeal, Newton's sentence was reduced to 10 years. The court also imposed an extended licence period, which is a common measure for serious offenders, ensuring continued supervision after release. Despite the reduction, the court made it clear that Newton would be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence in prison before being eligible for parole or early release, emphasizing the seriousness with which the justice system viewed his crimes and criminal history.
