2004: PARTNERS JAILED FOR SEX ABUSE

At Worcester Crown Court, two individuals who provided financial support to a teenage girl they both sexually abused were sentenced to prison.

John Mumford, 50 years old, justified giving the girl money—£70—by claiming it was for her benefit.

His abusive actions included groping her and pressing himself against her.

He also inflicted harm using a shoe and a cane on a child, and was recorded hitting another person with a sign.

Mumford was sentenced to over three years in prison and ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for ten years; upon release, his license was extended by an additional four years.

Judge David Matthews denounced Mumford as a 'cruel bully,' pointing out his difficulty understanding the seriousness of his conduct in a pre-sentence interview.

The victim, now in her twenties, was described as being 'considerably damaged' by the abuse.

Prosecutor Michael Anning told the court that Mumford's molestation of the girl occurred between 1994 and 1997, and he suggested Mumford may have taken nude photos of her.

Mumford admitted to three counts of indecent assault and two of child cruelty.

His defense attorney, Rashpal Mondair, explained that Mumford's interest in pornography—none of which involved children or was hardcore—was a factor in his behavior.

He also revealed that he was experiencing marital problems and feelings of shame.

Mumford resides in Neville Close, Redditch.
