JOHN MONGAN AND SHOCKING CHILD GROOMING IN LONDON
An alarming case of online grooming and exploitation has come to light involving a man from East London who engaged in disturbing attempts to prey on underage girls through social media.John Joseph Mongan, a 54-year-old resident of Ruby Close in Hackney, was found to have used a fake Facebook profile under a pseudonym to target what he believed were six young girls, aged between 12 and 14 years old, during the period from May 2020 to August 2020.
His actions unveiled a disturbing pattern of trying to lure and manipulate vulnerable minors online.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Mongan went to great lengths to build trust with these fictitious profiles, adding them as friends and initiating private messages in what he thought were innocent exchanges.
However, despite the profiles clearly stating their young ages and repeatedly reminding him of their innocence, Mongan’s responses soon turned explicit and increasingly aggressive.
Police investigators detailed how Mongan’s messages became very demanding and included graphic material.
He sent numerous photographs of what he claimed was his penis, deliberately attempting to sexualize the interaction.
His communication style was described as highly intrusive, making frequent efforts to solicit sexualized phone and video calls with what he believed were underage girls.
The messages also revealed his attempts to use money as an incentive, as he sent images displaying large amounts of cash and asked how the girls would like to spend it.
In one of his messages, Mongan explicitly stated, “all I want in return is plenty of sex and love from you could you give me all of that,” illustrating his predatory mindset.
The police revealed that he sought not only to engage in online sexual conversations but also to meet the minors in person, showing a blatant disregard for the law and their age.
The law enforcement authorities eventually orchestrated an undercover operation, culminating in Mongan’s arrest.
On August 8, 2020, they lured him to Homerton train station in Hackney under the false pretense of meeting a 14-year-old girl he had contacted on Facebook for a sexual encounter.
Mongan recognized the trap upon arriving at the station, left the scene, but was later detained when he was observed nearby later that evening.
His criminal proceedings progressed over the following years.
In January 2022, Mongan was formally charged and placed in remand custody.
It was not until August 2022 that a jury found him guilty of multiple serious offences.
His sentencing took place on September 28 at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where he received a prison sentence of nine years.
Additionally, he has been placed on the sex offenders register for life, marking the severity of his crimes.
Mongan faced multiple charges, including six counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, two counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to meet a child following acts of sexual grooming.
The police emphasized the malicious intent and awareness displayed by Mongan throughout the investigation.
Despite knowing his actions were illegal and wrong, he actively attempted to erase evidence of his communications, deleting conversations and attempting to cover his tracks.
Officers dedicated numerous hours to scrutinize his devices, ultimately linking the fake Facebook profile to Mongan and assembling sufficient evidence for conviction.
PC Lindsey England of the Central East Online Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Team led the investigation.
She commented, “As part of the investigation I reviewed hundreds of pages of communication.
Almost every single page contains extremely sexualized chat from Mongan, with him sometimes giving detailed instructions and descriptions of sexual acts.
The profiles he believed were minors did little to encourage his behavior, often reminding him of their inexperience and disinterest in sex.
Mongan’s manipulative tactics and grotesque language are some of the worst I have seen.
His tactics involved threats, promises of care, love, and money, all to serve his own perverted interests.
His focus was entirely on grooming and abusing who he thought were six different children, showing no regard for the potential harm caused.
His persistent efforts to hide his crimes suggest he might have continued offending had he not been caught and brought to justice.
