In June 2011, a disturbing case emerged involving a teenage boy from Kidderminster who was convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl. The individual in question, John Millichip, aged 19, who was known locally for his magic performances and his charitable efforts for Comic Relief, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his actions.

Millichip, residing on Coronation Way in the Comberton estate, appeared before Worcester Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to the charges of sexual assault. The court was informed that the incident took place on February 24, when the 12-year-old girl visited Millichip’s home. During their time together, they watched a cartoon DVD in his bedroom, which initially seemed innocent. However, the situation escalated as they shared kisses and embraces, and the young girl was subjected to inappropriate touching. According to the prosecutor, Alex Warren, the assault was halted when the girl explicitly told Millichip to stop. Despite this, the emotional impact on the girl was profound, with her mother later describing the incident as “like a hurricane tearing through the family.”

During the hearing, Millichip’s defense lawyer, Michael Aspinall, emphasized that there had been no threats or coercion involved, and that the initial friendship appeared proper without any grooming behavior. Nonetheless, the judge, Christopher Plunkett, highlighted that Millichip had been persistent in his attempts to maintain contact with the girl, despite her mother’s polite warnings to stay away. The judge characterized the act as a misguided and inappropriate lapse by a 19-year-old towards someone significantly younger.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed a five-year sexual offences prevention order, which prohibits Millichip from having any contact with girls under the age of 16. Furthermore, he is required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years. Millichip, a former pupil of King Charles I School, had been performing magic shows since he was 15 and had even auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, making the case particularly notable within the local community of Kidderminster.
