JOHN MCCULLOCH FROM WEST LOTHIAN JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN GLASGOW AND BATHGATE

In a case that has shocked the local communities of West Lothian and Glasgow, John McCulloch, a 69-year-old retired engineer, has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison for the horrific abuse of two young children during the 1970s and 1980s.

McCulloch's crimes came to light after one of his victims, prompted by recent publicity surrounding other sex abuse cases, decided to come forward and report her ordeal to the police.

This revelation led to a thorough investigation that uncovered the disturbing history of abuse inflicted by McCulloch, who resided in Bathgate, West Lothian.

During the proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow, McCulloch pleaded guilty to five charges of abuse, including indecent assault.

The court was told that the abuse began when the victim was just five years old, with McCulloch targeting a young boy in the late 1970s.

The assaults persisted over several years, causing lasting trauma.

In addition to the boy, McCulloch also molested a young girl, who was approximately seven years old at the time.

The court heard that McCulloch claimed to be 'teaching' her about her body, even showing her anatomy textbooks as part of his manipulative tactics.

He warned her not to tell anyone, asserting that others would be 'prudish,' a warning that kept her silent for years.

The girl endured almost daily abuse until she reached the age of 16, a period during which she became increasingly troubled by her experiences.

Her suffering was compounded when McCulloch later sent her a letter of apology, which she described as a 'heightened' reminder of her trauma.

It was only in 2015, after media coverage of other abuse cases, that she finally decided to report her experiences to the police, prompted by her own reflections on her past.

The second victim, who had confided only in his wife about his ordeal, was eventually traced and also provided details of the abuse he suffered at McCulloch's hands.

The court heard that his suffering was kept hidden for many years, and the revelations brought to light the extent of McCulloch's predatory behavior.

Judge Lord Beckett described McCulloch's conduct as 'corrupting' and causing 'profound damage' to his victims.

He emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating that the severity of the abuse left no choice but to impose a substantial prison sentence.

The judge highlighted the articulate and measured statements made by the victims, which underscored the lasting impact of McCulloch's actions.

In delivering the sentence, Lord Beckett made it clear that such serious offenses warranted a significant period of incarceration, reflecting the court's condemnation of McCulloch's actions and the need for justice for the victims.
