JOHN MANVELL SENTENCED IN STEYNING FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILD
In a case that has shocked the community of Steyning, John David Manvell, aged 67 and formerly residing on Mill Road, was brought before Lewes Crown Court to face serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a young girl. The court proceedings, held on Friday, September 5, revealed the gravity of the offences committed by Manvell, who was convicted of two separate counts of sexual abuse against a three-year-old girl known to him.Manvell was sentenced to a total of ten years in prison, with the court imposing six years for one count of inciting the young girl to engage in sexual activity and an additional seven years for the count of sexual touching. These sentences are to be served concurrently, meaning he will serve the longer term of seven years, but with an extended licence period of three years following his release. Furthermore, the court issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order against him, restricting his future interactions and activities to prevent any further harm.
The offences took place at Manvell’s residence in Steyning between December 2013 and March of the following year. The victim, who was only three years old at the time, was a girl known to Manvell, which added a disturbing layer of betrayal and breach of trust. The case was brought to light through diligent investigation and the courageous testimony of the young girl and her family.
Detective Constable Dani Flude expressed her appreciation for the victim’s bravery, stating, “The victim was extremely brave in speaking out and we have been supporting her throughout. We would like to thank her and her family for their courage.” She also commended the efforts of everyone involved in uncovering and prosecuting the case, noting that the judge acknowledged the dignity shown by the victim’s parents during the proceedings.
DC Flude emphasized the seriousness with which the authorities treat such offences, adding, “I am pleased that this case has been resolved with Manvell being given a significant sentence. We take reports of sexual offences very seriously and will make sure we do all we can to get justice for a victim. If anyone has any concerns about this kind of offence, please speak to us.”
