JOHN MAIR AND HIS SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN GLASGOW AND SPAIN
A 74-year-old man from Glasgow, John Mair, has been sentenced to prison after a series of horrific sexual abuse crimes committed against young girls spanning over a decade. The news comes after authorities in Spain captured Mair at his luxurious villa located within the exclusive Hacidenda Riquelme golf resort in Sucina, where he had been living a lavish lifestyle, and successfully extradited him back to Scotland to face justice.
The arrest followed a detailed investigation into allegations of historic sexual offenses, which surfaced after Mair had been living abroad.
He had been detained in Spain for approximately three months in a Spanish prison before being returned to the UK to stand trial.
Mair was charged with multiple counts of abusing minors at addresses in Glasgow and Livingston, West Lothian, dating back to the early 1980s through the mid-1990s.
His actions only came to light publicly when one of his victims bravely confided in a relative in 2013, revealing the abuse she endured at the hands of the Glasgow resident.
One of the survivors, a woman now aged 39, gave an exclusive account to the Glasgow Times, describing how her life had been forever altered by Mair’s grooming and sexual misconduct.
She recounted feeling manipulated through false affection, recalling Mair whispering, “you are my favourite,” during a time when she believed she was special to him.
She expressed relief that Mair had finally admitted his guilt, describing him as a “creepy old man” who showed no remorse for his actions.
Her testimony revealed the long-term emotional trauma inflicted by Mair, who she said possessed an unsettling hold over her for many years.
She emphasized her determination to confront him in court and spoke about witnessing his sentencing personally.
She recalled looking him in the eye as he was handcuffed and led away, and expressed the painful reality that while he would serve 26 months in prison, her own pain felt like a lifetime of suffering.
Another survivor, now 64, detailed her harrowing experience, which started when she was just 10 years old.
She described the moment Mair entered her bedroom wearing a short dressing gown and holding a bottle of alcohol, before making inappropriate remarks and touching her inappropriately.
She remembered being asked personal questions about her relationships and even about her private parts, actions that left a permanent scar.
Later, she recalled being at a family gathering around Christmas when Mair lured her into a room, where he again touched her inappropriately.
Her account was marked by fear and confusion, as she froze in the moment, unsure of how to react.
The court also heard about a second victim, who was only 12 at the time she was targeted.
Mair, wearing only underpants, had initiated kissing and sexual touching on her living room sofa during a visit to a mutual friend's house.
He attempted to assault her further by rubbing her back and buttocks under her nightdress, while professing his love for her.
The young girl, overwhelmed and frightened, escaped to the bathroom and sat behind the door all night, unable to alert anyone.
She described feeling confused about what was happening, recalling her innocence and lack of experience with such situations.
Throughout the proceedings, Mair’s defense argued that alcohol consumption contributed to his behavior, and expressed sorrow for the pain caused.
His guilty plea to three counts of sexual abuse was accepted by the court, which sentenced him to 26 months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to surrender his passport and remain in the UK while social workers conducted background checks.
In a distressing attempt to avoid punishment, Mair offered to pay compensation to his victims in exchange for his release.
This proposition was rejected outright by Sheriff Jane Farquharson, who publicly condemned his lifestyle and declared him a danger to society.
She pointedly stated, “You have enjoyed a very lucrative lifestyle living abroad in a golf resort, but you are a paedophile, and you were a danger to people.” Mair’s offending remained concealed for many years until one victim's disclosure in 2013 sparked the investigation that uncovered his numerous abuses.
The revelations emerged amidst the global #MeToo movement, which empowered victims worldwide to come forward.
His actions have profoundly impacted his victims, tearing apart their relationships and shattering their trust, leaving scars that will last a lifetime.
As part of his sentence, Mair will also be registered on the sex offenders register for the next ten years, a measure designed to monitor and prevent future offenses.
His case underscores the long-lasting trauma inflicted upon his victims and highlights the importance of justice in addressing such heinous crimes.
