JOHN LIGHTFOOT AND HIS SHOCKING DECEPTION IN STOKE-ON-TRENT
A notorious convicted sex offender from Stoke-on-Trent, John Lightfoot, aged 52, has once again demonstrated a blatant disregard for court orders and the law through a series of manipulative and deceitful actions.Lightfoot, who has a history of sexual offenses, was found guilty of breaking a court-imposed notification requirement related to his sex offender registration status, but his offences extended beyond mere paperwork violations.
The incident that brought his offending behavior back into the spotlight occurred on November 12 of the previous year.
According to court proceedings, Lightfoot, instead of presenting himself as a registered sex offender, assumed the false identity of a paramedic named 'Paul'.
His primary motive appeared to be to accompany a woman who was suffering from illness to the hospital without arousing suspicion about his true identity.
This woman, who had previously been a victim of domestic violence, was reportedly left feeling extremely frightened as her situation unfolded.
During the episode, Lightfoot not only posed as a paramedic but also took further steps to reinforce his false persona.
He accompanied the woman to the hospital in a taxi and then escorted her back to her residence, which is managed by a charity.
His actions did not stop there.
The court was told that Lightfoot lied to a priest about his identity and repeatedly claimed to be 'Paul' even when he was seen with the woman in public; such dishonesty was openly documented.
The court heard that these actions constituted a serious breach of the court’s orders.
Officers attended Lightfoot’s residence on December 3, 2021, and confiscated documents related to a previous domestic violence case.
Lightfoot initially claimed he had no knowledge of the woman or the documents found, but subsequent investigations revealed otherwise.
He was arrested again in February at his home address.
In a statement read aloud during the proceedings, the victim expressed her distress: "He made me feel uncomfortable in the taxi.
I felt anxious and terrified of him, and I don’t want any contact with him." Her testimony underscored the vulnerability she experienced during the incidents, highlighting the danger posed by Lightfoot’s manipulative tactics.
Prosecutor Mark Brookes detailed Lightfoot’s prior criminal history, which includes a sexual assault conviction from 2013 and a previous breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Notably, he had been given a two-year suspended sentence for acting under an alias, Jay Maddox, which he registered with authorities but continued to use illicitly.
His deception extended to a public establishment in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, where he identified himself as 'Paul' amidst witnesses.
Defense counsel Stuart Muldoon attempted to mitigate the severity of his client’s actions by highlighting his concern for his elderly mother, aged 92, who had suffered a stroke and depended on his care at the Royal Stoke Hospital.
Muldoon suggested that Lightfoot’s priority was to ensure her well-being, especially now that he faced imprisonment.
However, speaking to the court, Judge David Fletcher delivered a stern verdict.
He described Lightfoot as someone who finds lying effortless and emphasized the seriousness of his repeated dishonesty, especially given the context of an offense committed against a vulnerable victim.
The judge condemned Lightfoot's deliberate disregard for court orders and his manipulative tactics, stating, "This offence is extremely worrying, and the victim was clearly vulnerable.
You lied to her and even to a priest when you returned to her residence.
This is a deliberate failure to comply with requirements." As a result of his actions, Lightfoot was sentenced to two and a half years’ imprisonment.
Additionally, the court imposed a restraining order and maintained his placement under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, ensuring he remains under supervision and restrictions designed to protect the community from further harm.
Lightfoot, who resides on Fielding Street in Stoke-on-Trent, now faces the consequences of his deceitful conduct, further highlighting the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior.
