JOHN JONES, RNLI OFFICIAL IN WALES, SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR REPEATEDLY RAPING BOY IN DYSHERTH

In February 2007, John Derrick Jones, a prominent RNLI figure in Wales, was sentenced to eight years in prison after confessing to multiple rapes of a young boy during the 1990s.

The offences were committed when the victim was between 11 and 14 years old, with Jones raping him "dozens of times," some of which occurred in swimming pool changing room cubicles, court proceedings revealed.

Jones, aged 52 and residing in Glan Fyddion, Dyserth near Rhyl, was the divisional manager for the RNLI Wales and West based in St Asaph.

He was also known for his involvement with the Army Cadet Force and was perceived as a respectable man by friends, family, and colleagues.

Despite this, Mold Crown Court heard how Jones kept a dark secret, which came to light only after his victim felt safe enough to report the abuse years later.

The court was informed that the victim was so severely traumatized by the incidents that he attempted suicide as a result.

Jones, who previously lived in Northwich, Cheshire, had no prior criminal convictions and had served in both the Army and Navy, worked on oil rigs, engaged in charity work, and held the rank of lieutenant in the Army Cadet Force.

Judge David Hale stated that Jones, who was arrested last summer, was in a position of great responsibility at the time.

The judge explained that, had the case gone to trial with the boy providing evidence, Jones could have faced a 12-year sentence.

The judge emphasized that Jones committed systematic abuse over several years, raping the boy possibly 20 to 30 times.

The case was aggravated by the victim's youth and the profound psychological impact, including an attempt at his own life.

Judge Hale remarked, "You at the time of your arrest had an extremely responsible job as divisional manager of the RNLI, and you have been highly regarded in the Army Cadet Force, with no criticism ever made against you.

That only makes it harder to comprehend why you committed such serious offenses against your victim." Prosecutor Simon Medland told the court that the abuse became "really serious" when the boy was just 11, and the rapes continued on multiple occasions.

The victim provided an impact statement indicating that Jones's actions prevented him from forming meaningful relationships with others.

During arrest, Jones experienced a fit in the interview room, and in subsequent interviews, he was initially reluctant to fully confront the allegations.

Defense lawyer John Gibson acknowledged that Jones had endured severe abuse himself as a teenager at the hands of a group of men, which he suggested might have influenced his actions.
