JOHN JARVIS OF MANCHESTER SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE CRIMES
In a case that has shocked the community of Manchester, an 88-year-old man named John Jarvis has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 20 years for a series of heinous child sexual abuse offenses committed over many years. The sentencing was handed down at Manchester Crown Court following a comprehensive trial that lasted eight days, during which Jarvis was found guilty of multiple serious charges.
John Jarvis, born on September 11, 1926, and residing on Woodham Road in south Manchester, was convicted of three counts of indecent assault, two counts of rape, and three counts of buggery.
These crimes, which spanned over a decade, only came to light after a victim bravely reported the abuse in December 2012.
The victim, now in his 30s, recounted that he was assaulted by Jarvis during his childhood and that the abuse had been systematic and ongoing.
The victim explained during police interviews that Jarvis had attempted to sexually assault him when he was a child, and he had tried to push Jarvis away.
Despite this, Jarvis reportedly made a disturbing comment, suggesting that he 'didn't seem to mind' when the victim was a child.
The victim also disclosed that he was aware of another child who had been similarly abused by Jarvis, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior that persisted over a period of 13 years, from 1988 to 2001.
Detective Constable Susan Hazell, who is based at Wythenshawe police station, commented on the case, emphasizing the long period during which Jarvis' abuse went unreported.
She stated, “Jarvis’ sex abuse went unreported for years and as he neared the end of his life he must have thought he’d got away with it.” Hazell praised the victim’s courage, noting, “However, he reckoned without the bravery of the man who had the courage to speak to the police and relive the dreadful abuse they suffered at Jarvis’ hands.” The detective also highlighted the strength and dignity of the victim, who provided evidence in court with remarkable composure.
Judge’s remarks reflected the gravity of the crimes, and Jarvis now faces the reality of spending his remaining years behind bars.
The court’s decision underscores the importance of justice for victims of childhood abuse, regardless of the offender’s age or the passage of time.
As Jarvis begins his sentence, he will have ample opportunity to reflect on the crimes he committed, which have left a lasting scar on his victims and the community of Manchester.
