JOHN JACK FROM PORTRUSH AND STRABANE SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE AND ABUSE
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Portrush and Strabane, John Jack, a 65-year-old man with ties to both towns, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the heinous crimes of child rape and sexual abuse. The offences spanned a period from 1979 to 1987, during which Jack exploited a young girl, who is now 29 years old, over several years.John Jack, whose address was listed as Bridge Street, Strabane, was found guilty of six counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault following a trial at Enniskillen Crown Court. The jury's verdict was unanimous, reflecting the strength of the evidence presented against him. The court heard that Jack's predatory behavior began when the victim was only nine years old, and he maintained his abusive actions until she was 16.
Judge Jeffrey Foote, presiding over the case, described it as one of the most severe and disturbing he had ever encountered. During the sentencing, he expressed his profound disappointment and concern, stating, "This was a dreadful case, and this child will be scarred for life." The judge acknowledged the personal tragedies faced by Jack, noting that his wife and mother had passed away, but emphasized that these circumstances did not diminish the severity of his crimes.
Judge Foote further detailed how Jack had systematically targeted the young girl, initially gaining her trust under the guise of friendship while working as an attendant at Strabane Swimming Pool. Over time, Jack exploited her vulnerability, using her as a sexual object for nearly five or six years. The abuse ceased only when the victim reached the age of 16, at which point she bravely reported the crimes to the police in November 2001.
The court's verdict underscores the gravity of Jack's actions and the lasting impact on his victim. The case has left a deep scar on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable children from such predatory behavior.
