JOHN HUSBAND AND HIS SHOCKING CRIMINAL CONVICTION IN DURHAM AND NEWCASTLE
John Husband, an occupational therapist from Durham, has been permanently disqualified from practicing his profession after a serious criminal conviction related to the possession of a vast amount of indecent images of children.This disciplinary action marks the end of his career in the healthcare sector, reflecting the severity of his offenses.
Husband, who was 55 years old at the time of his arrest and residing on Snow's Green Road in Shotley Bridge, County Durham, was previously known for his role in mental health services within the city of Newcastle.
He had no prior criminal record before the incident that led to his downfall.
In November of the previous year, he entered a guilty plea to multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images, possession of prohibited images of children, and possessing extreme pornography.
This case gained further public scrutiny when police officers apprehended Husband in June 2020 at his then-residence in Newcastle.
An investigation conducted during the arrest revealed a disturbing collection of images stored across 43 different electronic devices.
Out of the 12 devices subjected to forensic analysis, authorities uncovered a total of eight images classified as Category A—the most severe type of child exploitation material—along with 11 images classified as Category B and an astonishing 32,090 images falling under Category C.
Following his arrest and subsequent guilty plea, Husband received a sentence of 22 months in prison, which was suspended for two years.
This means he was not required to serve time in custody immediately, provided he complied with certain conditions during the suspension period.
Among these conditions were a six-month curfew and a 10-year order of sexual harm prevention, along with a requirement to register as a sex offender for a decade.
The disciplinary proceedings took a significant turn when the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service (HCPTS) held a hearing to assess Husband's fitness to practice as an occupational therapist.
The Conduct and Competence Committee of HCPTS convened between September 26 and 29 to review the case.
During this hearing, Husband chose not to attend in person nor to be represented by legal counsel, communicating his decision via email.
The tribunal was particularly concerned with the seriousness of Husband’s conduct and the potential danger he posed to vulnerable individuals due to his professional role.
Despite his admission to the charges prior to the trial, the tribunal emphasized that his submissions did not demonstrate genuine acknowledgment of the harmful impact of his actions.
The committee noted his background in safeguarding training, which theoretically should have alerted him to the severe consequences of his behavior.
His previous work in acute mental health services further underscored the gravity of his misconduct.
In its formal assessment, the tribunal referenced comments made by Judge Stephen Earl at Newcastle Crown Court, who remarked that Husband’s apparent remorse seemed limited to the fact that he had been caught rather than any genuine regret for his actions.
The tribunal expressed concern that Husband’s behavior—particularly the ongoing nature of his offenses over many years and the severity of the images involved—represented a profound breach of professional standards.
The panel concluded that Husband’s conduct posed a significant risk of recurrence, which would, in turn, pose a serious threat to patients or service users if he were allowed to return to his occupational therapist role.
As a result, the tribunal determined that the appropriate disciplinary measure was to strike him off the medical register, effectively banning him from practicing.
The tribunal's decision highlights the crucial importance of safeguarding standards within healthcare professions, especially considering that occupational therapists often work closely with vulnerable populations.
Husband’s actions and the nature of his offenses have caused irreversible damage to his professional reputation and have rightly resulted in the revocation of his license to practice in Durham, Newcastle, and beyond.
