KENT SEX OFFENDER JOHN GILLIVER CAUGHT IN SHOCKING VOYEURISM SCANDAL AT FOLKESTONE HARBOUR
In a significant case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Kent, particularly in the areas surrounding Folkestone and Charing, authorities have successfully brought to justice a sex offender named John Gilliver. The conviction stems from a series of disturbing incidents involving voyeurism and the illegal collection of indecent images, including those of children.
On the afternoon of Sunday, July 10, 2022, Kent Police officers responded to reports of suspicious activity at Folkestone Harbour.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed Gilliver, aged 62, exhibiting suspicious behavior and taking photographs on the beach.
His actions raised immediate concerns, prompting the officers to intervene and arrest him on the spot.
During the arrest, authorities seized a pair of sunglasses equipped with a built-in camera, along with a neck chain capable of recording and storing images.
These devices were believed to be used by Gilliver to secretly capture images without the knowledge or consent of others.
A subsequent search of his residence in Charing, located on Maidstone Road, uncovered additional recording equipment and devices, further evidence of his illicit activities.
Analysis of the data retrieved from these devices revealed a disturbing collection of indecent images, some of which depicted children.
This discovery was a critical element in the investigation, which uncovered a pattern of voyeuristic behavior extending beyond the initial incident at Folkestone Harbour.
Further inquiries by Kent Police detectives revealed that Gilliver had installed covert cameras at the homes of two individuals he knew—a man and a woman.
These cameras were used to spy on them secretly, with the intent of satisfying his own sexual gratification.
Such invasive acts demonstrated a calculated effort to invade the privacy of innocent residents, adding a deeply troubling dimension to his crimes.
Following a thorough investigation, Gilliver was formally charged with multiple offenses, including making indecent images of children, voyeurism, and possessing indecent images.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to these charges in court.
On Thursday, July 11, 2024, Gilliver appeared before Canterbury Crown Court, where he was sentenced to a prison term of one year and eight months.
In addition to his incarceration, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, aimed at preventing any future offenses and protecting the community from further harm.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of Kent Police to combat sexual offenses and protect vulnerable individuals from invasive and exploitative behaviors.
The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
