JOHN GIBSON CONVICTED IN CARLISLE FOR CRUELTY AND REGULATORY BREACHES AT ABATTOIR
Convicted in 2022, slaughterman John Gibson, born around 1981 and residing on Mount Pleasant Road, Currock, Carlisle, was caught on CCTV decapitating cattle before they had fully bled out.Gibson, who is employed at Carlisle Abattoir located on Brunthill Road, Kingstown, Carlisle, managed by West Scottish Lamb Ltd, admitted to four violations of the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (England) Regulations 2015.
Prosecutor Pam Ward explained that the offences were uncovered when a veterinarian reviewed CCTV footage from the defendant’s workplace.
The footage revealed that Gibson failed to comply with the regulation requiring an animal, after being stunned and having its throat cut, to be allowed to bleed for at least 30 seconds.
This regulation applies after the carotid or jugular arteries are severed during slaughter.
In addition to these breaches, it was noted that Gibson’s Facebook profile contained images of him lamping and persecuting wildlife with dogs, suggesting that inflicting suffering on animals is also a hobby of his.
The CCTV footage showed that Gibson ignored the bleeding regulation on four separate occasions in 2021, specifically on May 14 and 18, and on May 20 and 21.
During the court hearing, Gibson stated he “got carried away”.
Presiding magistrate Jill Robinson remarked that Gibson appeared “too engrossed” in his work, which led to animals suffering due to his rushing.
The court sentenced him to pay a total fine of £726.
