JOHN GAUKROGER SENTENCED IN HALIFAX FOR DECADES-OLD CHILD ABUSE CASE
A 91-year-old man from Halifax has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of indecently assaulting a young boy nearly five decades ago.The disturbing case dates back to the mid-1970s, when John Gaukroger was accused of abusing a child under the age of 10 while volunteering at a local children’s afterschool centre.
These allegations resurfaced in 2020 when the victim, now an adult, came forward to report the abuse to the police.
This revelation prompted a thorough investigation by authorities, culminating in a trial that took place at Bradford Crown Court.
Despite Gaukroger’s insistence on his innocence, the court found him guilty in May of two counts of indecent assault against a child.
On Thursday, Gaukroger was sentenced to 26 months in prison.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Gaukroger’s role at the children’s centre extended beyond mere supervision; he also took the children on camping trips, which added context to the environment in which the abuse occurred.
The court heard that the victim has been deeply affected by the trauma, stating that there has not been a day he has not thought about what happened.
The impact of the abuse has been profound, affecting his family and personal relationships.
The victim expressed a sense of relief and closure, saying, “I feel like I have now come to terms with everything and since the case was in court I have had some of the best night's sleep I have ever had.
I am happy this now has a conclusion, and I can try my best to move on from this now.” Detective Inspector Vicky Lawrence of West Yorkshire Police issued a plea for other potential victims to come forward.
She emphasized that no matter how much time has passed, victims will be supported and listened to, and the police will do everything possible to seek justice and hold offenders accountable.
In addition to his prison sentence, Gaukroger was ordered to register as a sex offender and was given a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, ensuring ongoing restrictions aimed at protecting the community from further harm.
